Just played a home tournament on Saturday. My wife has a friend a work and she and her husband hold a nice tournament on a monthly basis. The "tour" started in February. This was the third one that my wife and I played in. It was great because it got my wife involved in the game and she loves to play (she is also very cheap which keeps me in line). I taught her how to play and she actually made the final table all three time but just short of the money. I, on the other hand, busted out relatively early in the two prior events.

It is an interesting group of characters. Several playes are teachers and administrators at local schools. Others are friends and friends of friends (we are always looking to bring new money to the game). There is a Secret Service Agent who wears his badge and gun to the games becasue he show up after work. There are the wives and even a homosexual. About half the players are novice and the other half are pretty solid and play online and in regular home games.

The reason I mention the homosexual is kind of funny. In Feb. he was not out of the closet yet and I couldn't tell the difference. Last night we had two tables going. He was not at my table but he was at my wife's table. He was the early chip leader at the dinner break. He was drawing straights left and right. Some new players (one was very drunk) started nicknaming him "THE STRAIGHT GUY." Meanwhile, everyone was trying not to fall out of their chair. It was ironic-guess you had to be there. Come to think of it, he actually busted me out of the first event when he cracked my two pair with a straight but I digress.

So we usually have anywhere from 10 to 20 players. $25 buy in. Fourth place gets their money back. Top three get paid. First place is usually $200 or so. Last night I took first. Playing live is a lot of fun.

The game started with 2 tables of 7 and combined when it was down to 8 players. Everyone started with $5000 in chips and blinds started at $50-100. Blinds increased every half hour. Game ran from 5:30 to 11. If you busted out there was another table for a side game.

I played tight. Folded a lot of marginal hands unless I was in a blind. If I was in, I was usually in for a raise. I stole a lot of blinds and my post-flop play was superior to just about everyone. The most interesting thing was that I did not see many big starting hands. I had QQ and KQ several times and a few pocket pairs but not many. Saw a lot of A9 and below. I never saw AA, KK or AK. Even in the absense of big cards, I steadily increased my stack a little at a time. Another interesting fact is that my biggest hand was 2 pair. I did not make any sets, straights, fh's etc. None. However, my opponents did see a straight flush and other big hands. Fortunately I was not involved in the action.

I was a little disappointed in having to grind it out. I usually like to set some traps and double up but it never happened. Not once over 6 hours. When the tables combined, I was one of top three chip leaders with about 12K. There was 70K in play. When the tables combined my cards got even colder if that is possible. Some of the short stacks battled it out. Eventually, I got my chance against the "drunk." He was smashed and he was also the chip leader. He was playing very lose, bluffing like cracy and really bullying everyone. I caught JJ and raise 2K. To my suprise I get 3 callers. Flop comes with and A, 5, rag. I check. Drunk goes all in. I call. He shows K 5. Turn and river are no help and I put him out of his misery. Now I'm in really good shape. The big stacks ate up the little guys and it was down to 3.

One of the guys was chip leader and really on a rush catching great cards. I'm on the button w/ J10s. I rasie. SB calls. BB/chip leader, after his big rush goes all in. Blinds were high and I paused. My read was that he was trying to bully and pick up our blinds and raises. I call. He shows 88 v/ my J10s. Flop comes w/ a 10, turn brings a J and I criple the big stack.

We traded blinds for a while among the three remaining players. The third guy was the guy who runs the game and it is his house. He has won several events. He is unpredictable and it is tough to put him on a hand. He was second in chips but I had him well covered. Dealt to me QJ. I raise 3x BB to try and pick up his blind. He calls. Flop comes rag rag J. I bet pot (6K). He stands up and thinks for along while. He reraises all in. I call immediately. He turns over 88, turn and river are no help. I'm at 60+K. Opponent was at less than 10K. We make a deal and I take first.

I know it was weak to make the deal but the wife was dealing and shuffeling with another lovely lady and the wife was tired and the dog had to be let out and we were playing for 6 hours. I had a 6 to 1 chip lead and the other guy conceeded 2nd place. I had to take it.

Not a bad night when my best hand was two pair.

Congrats. Sounds fun.

By the way, under your name, you have the title "straight".

grats! sounds almost like an exact copy of the monthly tournament i host at my place.. except most of us are unmarried and out of college just a few years. Good mix of solid players and novices. We played this past friday and i managed to place second despite being the short stack(3k out of 28.5k) on the cusp of money(4 left, top 3 money). managed to steal enough to make it past the two big stacks all in showdown pair aces vrs flush on the river and then wait even longer for the pair aces vs two pair made on the river.. then promptly chopped 8)
