I'm holding a tourney tonight at my house. I've bought plenty of beer, chips, soda and am gonna buy some pizza as well...Going into the costs of it, I figure I have to, at minimum, place in the tourney to break even. Now, my question is, would it be tacky to tell people that the tournament is a $20 buy-in w/ a say, $2 or $3 entry fee since Im providing grub. Didn't know if this would be a tacky move or not, and, being that Im not down with being tacky, I thought I'd put it out there for other player's opinions......

Me and my friends do it a lot. On avg say $20 + whatever 2,3, 4 dollars for beer, soda, chips etc... It's not tacky at all...It would be tacky if you did sprung it on em like 2 minutes before you say shuffle up and deal...other than that it's fine.

well yes i would do that.
There is one house here in Oklahoma that does a rake under the table. Against the law in Oklahoma but they do it hush hush for the drinks and things they buy.
Yes I would charge a buy-in plus a fee.
so like 10+1 the 1 going to your pocket.

I know alot of people who do that..
$25 tourney, but food/expenses are taking out of the payout..
or just throw in a couple bucks for food/beer / pot prior to it starting..
I have NO problem paying $5 for pizza and beer 8-)

Don't call it an entry fee. Calling it an "entry fee" is tacky.
Just ask that everyone chip 5 bucks in on food and drink. If your friends are douches about it. Find new ones.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal if the money goes back to the players. In this case in the form of nourishment.

If it has to do with a "rake" then yes it is illegal. But of course there are so many home games going on and no one to enforce it so no big deal. This is in part of cash games.
In tourneys its different. Someone will just ask for some donations or money for the stuff that they have bought. no biggy

Well in most states. Gaining any profit at all from running a gambling game is considered illegal. But as it's been said. A small home is hardly worth the police's time. So instead of calling it an entry fee. Just tell people to either BYOB/F or kick in for "refreshments".

If you host it all the time then charge away. Where I play though we rotate hosts so it basically equals out in the long run. If some gets particularly trashed or eats a hell of a lot they're usually cool about it and will throw you some money.

I think its fine also...
When we play we usually bring a bag of chips and whatever we plan on drinking to whereever we're going so the host doesnt have to deal with catering to everyones needs.

My game and other home tourneys we have the buy-in plus fee for pizza. I provide soda, coffee and maybe some chips for free. If you want liquor BYOB. Most people bring something like a covered dish or beers/soda.
You can be generous and foot the bill yourself but that is not acceptable if you are the host every time. Try moving game to another house every month to spread out the cost of being host.
Otherwise, charge a fee for food BUT make sure you spend all the money on food/beverage and not trying to make a profit from hosting a game. That is illegal and tacky.

Not at all tacky. I've chipped in before... but I usually just buy a couple bags of chips, and operate on a BYOB(everage) system.

my bi-weekly home game it pretty casual, a bunch of coworkers and mayber a friend or two. as far as food and drink go, it's bring your own. if the group agrees, which it usually does, we all pitch in for pizza. like five bucks a head and we get that 555 deal from dominos, we usually have leftovers and eveyone gets full. nothing more complicated than that. it's pretty friendly though. if someone's having a rough night and runs out of beer, we usually all share.
there should be no reason you shouldn't ask for everyone to kick down on the grub though, common courtesy. i wouldn't call it a fee though, might make the event illegal, at least it would in my state.

Just ask people for a donation. Most guys don't mind if you tell them that you paid for all that stuff. All the guys at my weekly game do the same and or bring snacks themselves for everyone.
