What kinds of strategies do you guys typically use in home games? My home game play is limited to playing against...well, idiots who don't know the game.

The type of game I'm gonna start playing is with a friend and his father in law, brother in law, cousin, and a few others. From what I understand, they all understand the game pretty well. One of them is a casino regular(though i don't think he's a professional).

It's a tournament set up, $10 buy in. 2nd gets the buy-in back and winner takes the rest(I think that's how they've got it set up). Typically about 6-7 play.

So how do most of you play in home games?

The only advice I can give you is to play extremely tight early on and let others duel it out and lose their chips, and possibly getting knocked out. When you have a significant hand like a straight or flush, try to double up.

If you're playing against idiots, they're most likely going to call most of the time and they'll end up dueling each other out.

If you're playing against good players, they'll most likely be aggressive and tend to bluff a lot trying to steal pots, as well as blinds based on position.

I personally play a little tighter then normal if I’m in a game for the first time till I can get a type of player on each person then I play my aggressive style... but don't try to bluff too much, unless you believe you can make the play work. I like what was said above let them do most the dueling, when it comes to tourney, it's all about finishing in the money.

I already read that thread, but the question posed in that thread dealt mainly with how to play beginners. I know that at least one of the guys in the game I'll be playing has played significantly. The others know the game pretty well, but the only money they've ever really played with is their home games.

Sorry, I thought you were looking for advice on how to play against the "idiot" players. I should have read your entire post before replying.

Since you are only 6-7 handed you have to be a little loose ie. you can't play only premium hands. Bet for information. If you want to knock people out, call raises with any PP and pray for a set. Another trick, is to limp with premium hands AK, KK, AA and trap someone who flops TPTK. Those are handy for getting someone to put all their chips in the pot.

DO NOT PLAY DRAWS. If game is only 6-7 handed and the people play correctly you will never have odds to draw. Just play poker. It's only 10 bucks and if you don't win you'll probably learn a few good lessons.
