Hey guys, I just recently signed up for the site although I usually read it on a regular basis. Thanks for the info, etc. much appreciated.
My question, at our normal home game, the host will rake the pot, which I dont mind, its usually not much, enough to pay for the food and drinks, snacks, etc. Its normally a low stakes limit game(2-4) Were going to start playing the tourny style because everyone seems to like it better and everyone has a feel for it. How would you go about buying snacks and all without the host losing alot of money in a tourny setting? Everyone bring their own beer, food? Give him a percent of the pot?
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. 8-)

Do it like the online casinos do it, ie $10 +1 where 1 is the rake, or however much you need to cover your costs, you can't rake the pot in a tourny, it'd be weird!

At our home tourney's we take turns hosting. The host usually buys beer, soft drinks and a few table snacks (chips, nuts, M&Ms). Most of the others bring something to share, and more and more are bringing their own beer.
Because we take turns hosting, the cost gets spread out pretty evenly. I hosted the last one and between beer and snacks spent about $50.

In most states and cities it is illegal to rake the pot. I think the wording is something close to, "It is illegal for anyone to gain money in any way other than winning it within the game rules"
If your friend wants to stay legal, he is best saying to bring $10 for the tournament (or whatever) and some extra to chip in for snacks.
It's all about the wording.

I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

The home games we play are BYOB/Food.
If you want somethign bring it.
We usually end up with a case of pop and beer that everyone shares.

It is illegal to rake the pot at home game for profit but if the host spends the entire rake on food/drinks it may be ok. You as a private citizen are not allowed to make money on running a gambling venue. That is a privilege reserved for the State and Federal Gov't.
At my home tournament, we play $25 entry and we collect for pizza after 2 hours. Sodas are on the house but if you want ETOH it is BYOB.
You can just have the policy stated above that if you want it, bring it.
You can have a pot luck where everyone brings something differnet ie. case of beer, covered dish etc...

Ahhh......nothing like a 2am ETOH call to get the juices flowing. I hate drunks. They pee themselves 95% of the time.

The idea of the host raking the pot seems extremely bizarre to me. If the true reason is to cover the cost of hosting the game, then why not just ask everyone to chip in a few bucks?
If its a tournament, just say there is a $10 (or whatever) buy in plus a $2 "party fee" to cover food and drink. In fact, even if its not a tournament you could do that.

Just have everyone pay like 5-10 bucks extra for food and drinks before hand, then come up with a separate buy in.

Well the idea behind it is that the person that generall wins the most will end up paying for everything in theory, if you lose $50 on the night atleast you got to drink and eat free.

In general. My wife rivals the supermarket when it comes to stocking my home with refreshments. We have everything one could want either alchoholic or non. So I bite the bullet there. If food is wanted though, it's put up or go hungry.
Usually a couple pizzas get ordered, and that carries us through the night. People even will bring their favorite chips to share with everyone. So it all works out in the end.
