The home games I attend (and host) usually end up being all-nighters. I almost always beat the field for several hours, but never leave with any money because I stay too long (either voluntarily or by compulsion). Everyone is usually drinking beer and are socializing as much as playing cards and we're all friends, so there's not any bloodthirst or high stakes playing.

Here's my question. How do I host a home game that doesn't digress into a neverending ring? When you guys play, do you cap the end of the game before you start with an end time? Does this work?

I've tried to play tournament style when I host, and that part of it has gone well. But as soon as 3 players are out, they begin a side game of ring, and by the time the tournament is over everyone is in the ring game, which has become the main game.

Am I the only one who has this problem? Probably I am, because my friends are all degenerates who don't think twice about staying up all night drinking beer and playing cards.

Oh, and if any of you are in my neck of the woods, you're invited to my next home game!

I agree. If you are better than the other players there, you should want the game to last all night.

We generally make an ending time before hand based on the various aspects of peoples lives and what they have to do the next day...not mine because i have no life.

Well why don't you list your neck of the woods on our official list in this section?

At other peoples house, just politely leave. "Thanks for the game, it's been fun but I have to go home now. good night."

At your house you set the blinds on the tournament and select a time when the game ends including the side games. Let everyone know the ending time before they show up.

Our home game is structured to end at midnight. Another game is structured to end no later than 2am. They have hnever lasted until 2am but in the event that it ever did, the remaining players must make a deal or play a one hand showdown.
Send lawyers, guns and money - the sh*t has hit the fan!

ChezJ is an unknown quantity at this point
if you're hosting and you are too tired to play good poker, then just become the dealer until everyone leaves... and tell 'em tips are welcome.

if you're at someone else's game, just set an alarm on your phone, get up to make a bogus phone call, then come back and say sorry guys gotta go... booty call. or family emergency. or just give no explanation at all.

better yet, tell them when you start that you have to go at xx a.m. then when the time comes, you can decide whether you want to extend your stay or bail as promised.

Ok, I'll admit to being a degenerate too.

I've told everyone that I'm leaving at X-am, and when the time comes, I always stay.

Our games almost NEVER end until sunup. It's not uncommon that we call it at 11am. So I guess I'm blaming my friends, but really, we're all a bird of a feather.

Our games often don't begin until 1:00am or later. We're all bartenders or bar patrons. I just am mad because I know I can play, but not at 7am after drinkin' all night. So I generally lose my winnings in the wee hours.

My own damn fault, I know.

What I REALLY need to do is set a regular once-a-week game at my house beginning at 9pm and close it at 1:00am. That way we can all still go to the bar before it closes, and if they want to play all night, they can always round up some fellas at the bar and go SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Not to nitpick, but aren't you 18? How can you be going to the bars?
