Just got myself a $1K starting live roll, so I expect to be around this forum a little more in the future. Trip report will come in the near future. Right now I want to try and read everything I can on the live game. Except for the odd home game/tourney with friends, I have no live experience and have never set foot in a casino for even a show, let alone cards. I figure there will be a huge learning curve for me but hopefully I start off on the right side of variance and can preserve my roll. I live in Toronto so I have 3 casinos to choose from, all within an hour. Rama, Blue Heron and Fallsview (Niagara).
Any quick tips or thoughts would help. Looking to play the lowest NL stakes. Any clues to the buy ins, blinds, rake and "etiquette" I should expect? Nothing is "standard" since I have never been. I read the sticky's but 2005 LHE is a long way away from here I would also like to know if anybody has any thoughts about timing? When is the better times to go to find:
a) Gamblers
b) Available Seats
c) anything else I'm not thinking of.
Trip report by the end of the week I hope.

Live play is fun if you aren't completely card dead.
You get to pay a lot more attention to your opponents.
Live play is a ton softer......
I don't know buyins at the Canadian casinos, but in the US they are generally $1-$2, $1-$3 for the lowest games, $2-$5 and up to $5-$10. Bigger casinos may even hold bigger games.
Best times to go are generally Friday evenings, and Saturdays. Outside of the big-time gambling areas like AC, LV, etc, I can't imagine there is much traffic on a Tuesday night.
Read stickies for ettiquette. There is some goot stuff in there.
Stacking chips is fun!

Jyms, I just wanted to say thanks for everything you've posted in other forums. It's helped me out alot. It's funny that I can return the favor. I found that alot of times going to play at like 10am is great. You get alot of the weak-tight players, who are playing cos they've got nothing else to do. That's great cos you can build up a healthy for when the place starts to fill up. I always like to be in seats 2,3,7 or 8. It allows you to see the entire table without having to move your head alot. Good luck!

Now those are the kinds of things I like to hear, It's something I have never heard of or would have thought of.
My goal would be to put in a healthy 12+ hour session so I would hope to get in some play. I was thinking it would be good to get to a spot early, find the right seat or have time to move to the right seat by the time the real gamblers show up.
Cardsman, Thanks. I think Toronto is touristy enough that I should still find enough games at off times. Maybe I need to get there and actually talk to somebody in the room to find out availability. I have read all the stickies since I don't want to run into any surprises, and the mucking and betting tips have already enlightened me. I guess I won't know if I'm playing 100BB or 50BB till I get there, since there is nothing on the website.
Question? Assuming it'll be around a $100 buy in w/blinds of $1/2, the $1K should be enough right? Since the hands will be slower and I'm only 1 tabling. What is concidered covered for variance in the game if I have 5 buy ins or 10? If it's 50BB's or 100BB?
Thanks guys, keep'em coming.

I would feel comfortable starting out with 5 buyins at a $1/2, at 100 BBs per buyin. I have $1200 in the live part of my roll that I use to play at the casino. The buyin there in the game I play is $100 bb for a $1-$3 game. If you run into that much varience in that soft a game, I would be surprised. The play level in the smallest games is something like $25 NL or $10 NL.
Watch for the drinkers--at least the talkative ones. They donate. The quiet ones do it for show, or can think while they drink, one or the other. Point being, the quiet ones play better.
You might want to think about sunglasses, not so people can't see your eyes, but after a while the red cards start looking alike and you might mistake a heart for a diamond if you have been playing a long time.
People stack off with TPWK a lot live. If you get a set play it hard.

I started a similar thread to this a while back, and one thing that I was concerned about was reloading while at the table. Since you are limited to 100bb and many raises are 5x the BB or more, so you are going to want to reload back up to 100bb often.
How do you do this without slowing down the game and constantly asking for more chips? I think the best answer is to get $300 or so in chips. Start out with your first $100 in play with the rest in your pocket. As necessary just put you extra money on the table after you are out of the hand you may want to ask if you need to announce or ask for a reload.
Also don't be afraid to ask questions people are generally very nice and you shouldn't give a rip if the other players think you're an idiot. GL

So you click their picture and then you get their money?

Generally you don't have to announce you are reloading, although I usually do for courtesy so people don't think I am going over the table max.
I won't do it until I am down a little, though (maybe $50 out of a $300 stack). This way I am not constantly reaching into my pocket. At a $300 max or $500 max buyin, it doesn't hurt too much because half the table buys in short (1/3 to 1/2 full buyin) anyway, so I still cover in most hands.

what do people do with their live roll while not using it? is it stashed throughout the place like in rounders, in a bank, in some other sort of investment account or what?

I have a separate account. My chequing is the house account and my poker account is under savings on the pin pad. I just deposit and withdraw. It's the same account tied to my Moneybookers.

when you go the first thing you need to do is get your name on the list for whichever game you want to play. low stakes as stated you're prolly lookin at $1-1 or 1-2 then make your way to a 2-5 game and so on. second, you need chips right?? most card rooms have chip runners. when you sit at your table just ask the dealer for "checks" and give your money to the girl and she brings your chips. this way you d ont have to hold on to your checks while you wait. be sure to tip a buck or two (to your chip runner). now youve got your checks and your ready to play. be confident when you walk up to the table talk the dealer like you know him--call him by name (most casinos they wear name tags.) Sure youve never met him but mmake the others think that you do they will automaticly give you respect as if you play there all the time. the dealer will usually play along and be friendly until you actually play enough where they know you by name. then you wont have to act. oops i forgot get a players card(most casinos issue them) that way you can earn comps for the amount of time you play. i eat free every day there just with the comps ive earned. the way i see it youre going to play so you might as well get comps in the process. then get to the game after all thats what you came for.
