I notice that several pros wear headphones at tournaments, and they are almost certainly just listening to their favorite music. But since some of them also have coaches and advisors, it occurred to me that someone might eventually attempt a one-way communication between an observer at a tournament and a player, via radio. It would not be too difficult to have something that looked and functioned like a CD player or ipod, but which also could be a receiver. Of course, any pro who is worthy of the name would not need advice on strategy, but they could conceivably benefit from additional observations of another player's tells, etc. I have been in enough casinos to know that anyone wearing headphones at a blackjack table (and winning) would be immediately suspect. I also think casinos have technology to detect any radio transmissions from the floor. Would a casino have any interest in detecting transmissions during a poker tournament (in which they have no direct money at risk), and do the tournaments have any rule that prohibits either "coaching" or transmissions? What do you think? Would it be of such little advantage that it would not be worth the effort?

Stuff only happens in casinos. I mean really, who gets quads? I must of pissed off the dealer with a bad tip and he put the "kill switch" on me... the same one Lee Jones has... and made me have the best hand until the river.

I always heard about offline casinos being rigged, but that night it was true. Apparently they wanted to increase the rake or something. I think the dealer purposely gave big hands to everyone just so they increase the betting.

Like two hands later AA was cracked by 5-8 o/s! And then someone flopped a full house and lost to rivered higher full house!! WTF! So rigged.

Found this rule at Harrah's 2005 WSOP:

Quote:
Headphones will not be permitted once a player reaches the money per prize structures.
It must be OK to wear them prior to that, when playing against the farmers, stockbrokers, and such, in the prelim rounds.

It's 10x easier to cheat in a live game than online and the risk is much lower. That is all.

Farmers played in the WSOP? So that's what happened to the family farm.....

The difference is who's doing the cheating. Online there is no doubt in my mind that there is cheating but it's being done at the casino level by manipulating algorithms. Maybe they want a certain percentage of new players to do well so that they become regular customers and they can do this by clever programming and even by outright manipulation of shuffled cards before they are turned up. I have no proof but just a suspicion.

Offline cheating is by individuals for their own gain. What's to stop 2 guys sitting next to each other from using their feet to signal? Nothing. If I see friends sitting next to each other I watch them closer to see if they show their cards to each other when they fold, or if they show them while contemplating a bet and I may ask the floor to separate them (or not if they are truly fish) or warn them. The pro cheats are much harder to spot though. You need to watch carefully and see if you can spot any laydowns that are suspicious and then see if you can spot them again. Even then it may not matter.

Live poker is extremely rigged. At rooms that get mostly local action you must be very careful. "Buddies" will raise and reraise to get everyone else out of a pot then check down to eachother. It is a very obvious form of collusion, but it is done and tolerated. Be aware of what is going on around you.
