Last weekend after our usual home tourney three of us decided to play with a short deck - sevens up. We played the usual rankings (including aces low for straights), but I'm sure they should be changed. I tried without success to find an explanation. I read somewhere that with sevens up a flush beats a full house, but I can't remember where.
Does anyone have or know of a resource that can help me here? A short explanation of the mathematics behind hand rankings would be ideal; I could apply that myself to a 32 or 36 card deck.

The less likely it is to obtain a hand ranking makes it a higher hand ranking.

Thanks for the conceptual explanation. I am, however, looking for a mathematical one.

The less mathematically likely it is to obtain a hand ranking makes it a higher hand ranking.

To the best of my knowledge in a 32 card deck
1. three of a kind beats str8
2. flush beats full house
