If you've played enough home games, you start to see a lot of the same behavior and hear the same remarks as it relates to bad poker decisions. Feel free to share yours. Below are the ones I've noticed the most lately:
  • "I always play J8 suited. It's my favorite hand." Many home game players have a favorite bad hand, which is great because they will play it when they get it. Whenever I hear that comment, I always think, "My favorite hand is pocket aces ... pocket kings is a close second "
  • "I always lose with pocket aces." Cool, let ME have them next time. I don't always win with them, but I win more times than not and the total money I've made from them has far outweighed the money I've lost with them.
  • "I'm getting 3 to 1 on my money, so I have to call." There's usually someone who has started or tried to learn the game but doesn't quite get the big picture and definitely can't see the forest for the trees. Pot odds are an important concept, but do you really know how to apply them? What % chance does 3 to 1 give you (hint, not 33%)? What % chance do you have to hit your draw? Are you considering villain redraws? Are you considering that you're drawing dead? How big does the pot and bet size need to be before you calling is the right decision when you have 3 to 1? I'd wager nine out of ten people in a typical home game who say something about getting odds on their money couldn't answer all those questions correctly. Furthermore, nine out of ten people who say it have also just alerted me that they are on a draw if after the flop or a weak hand if before the flop, which almost completely negates any winnings from me they may get should they hit.
  • "I bet a dollar on the flop. Now I'll bet a dollar on the turn. Let's make it one more dollar on the river." This is level 0 thinking about pot sizes, stack sizes, and pot odds. They have an idea about how much a bet value means to them and they just bet that on every street. They routinely price me into draws and don't extract nearly enough money as they should when their hand holds up.
  • "I had to play 83o. 8's have been HOT tonight." Heh, excellent, keep playing those 8's, Monty. I LOVE superstitious poker players.
  • "I hate pocket Jacks (or Tens)." Yes, Jacks and Tens can be tough to play @ times, but I like them and play them and make money with them in the long run. Again, any time you get Jacks or Tens, you have carte blanche to automatically swap them with my random hand.
I don't say those things because I don't like to tap the fish tank, but you can bet I'm thinking it.

34o is my favorite home game hand. Don't ask me why. I just fool around at home games anyway. I only want some of that internet money!

"I play every hand, you never know what the flop is going to bring!"

"Hey, come over here, look what I got!" Guy shows out of game buddy his hand. (He always has AA or KK)

More on favorite hands....
"Did you know my favorite hand is J8?" Cards dealt "Guess what hand I got!" Flop comes J88, everyone folds. "See, my favorite hand always wins."

"Call him, he's always bluffing" This phrase has made me so much money

Board is 555AK, dealer goes through mucked cards. Leans over to another player and Whispers audibly "somebody folded a 5"

Same board, but someone who folded exclaims loudly something like "OH MAN!!!!" then starts looking through the dead cards to show someone else what they folded.
Poker is easy, it's winning at poker that's hard.
