Warning: This post will be long
Over the last month I have visited Vegas twice over the last month. This is what I have learned:
You will require lots of luck in combination with good play. Here are a few hands that I had the pleasure of losing:
1) Dealt pocket Qs in EP. Raise pre-flop and get a couple callers. Flop is 9 high with no draws. Make bet of about 3/4 pot. One player raises. I recognize the player as being weak so I re-raise all-in. He call and flips over 9-6. He has top pair no kicker. He then hits runner-runner for the straight.
Result - Lose $200
2) AQ suited. Play accordingly and flop comes Q high w/flush draw. I be and another player goes all-in and another player goes all-in. I figure I am still ahead and call. Sure enough I am ahead, 1st player is Q-8 and second is on flush draw. River brings the 8.
Result - Lose almost $300
3) Pocket Ks. Flop my set and there is a flush draw on the board. I bet and a player moves all-in. I call (I put him on flush draw - which he was) and he makes the flush.
Result - Lose ~ $200
What do I think of the type of situations above - I love them. This is how I make money - in the long run. Problem is that if you are going to try and playing a live cash game in Vegas, there is no long run.
On an average weekend you may only play ~720 hands (40 hands/h * 3 days * 6 hours/day). This is not enough to overcome some of the bad beats you may encounter. As a result you do require a good dose of luck. Any on-line player will tell you that your results can vary wildly over a period of less then 1,000 hands.
The good news. You encounter the same situations, but you hands hold-up. You will finish the weekend a big winner.
The fact of the matter is that is that the low-limit NL games are a great place to make money. But the variance is huge. Be prepared for the fact that your winnings can, and probably will be, abnormally high or low.
So how should you play - Tight/Aggressive is still the way. Even though you may take a beating you are still playing in a manner that will reap profits in the long run and will give you the best chance of winning big.
Bad Decisions - If visiting Vegas to try B&M , realize that you may make some bad decisions. Here are two reasons why:
1) Bad beats with so few hands - If you are use to on-line play where you can play 750 hands in a few hours or less - B&M play can be frustrating. Be aware of this point and be prepared to deal with it.
2) Fatigue - No one sleeps as much as they usually do in Vegas. Fatigue can result in some bad decisions especially when you are forced with a tough decision.
Overall, I recommend that every player make a journey to Vegas to play some live poker. It is a great experience. If you play well and the poker stars align, there is the potential to make a killing.

Nice points regarding variance. I want to visit in the winter, hopefully I'm on the good side of it!
Welcome to FTR. Vancouver BC? Yay we have another one!

I'm just waiting on work to send me over there for a conference! That way I can claim the trip back on expenses and spend all my downtime at the tables (actually saving money on food!).
I'll have to save up first though!

It's always interesting to see the outsider perspective on Vegas poker. (Sorry also for the month-late reply, but I just returned to FTR after a long hiatus.)

OTOH, you will also encounter fewer bad beats on average than in a similar timeframe online. The concept certainly applies if you have a string of bad beats, but either way, it averages out (of course discounting difference in opponent playstyle).
Additionally, play is far looser at Vegas tables than online play. While this increases the chances of being handed a bad beat, it also increases the return from forcing others to make bad calls on draws or bad hands. My personal experience is that typically a $8/16 limit ring table in B+M will be as loose as a $2/4 table online.

I think that online players will be more frustrated with the slow play, period. It's the main reason I don't play B+M anymore. Everything about it is slow - the dealing, the shuffling, and obviously the players, and after I started playing online I just don't have the patience anymore. Not to mention, there is simply no way I can make more money in a B+M casino than I can 4 or even 3-tabling online.
