Hey, I'm just starting a thread I'm sure I'll add to later this weekend. Later tonight will be my first live poker experience, $20 SnG's. I'm not planning to win. First, I suck at SnG's and MTT's, I just hack around for fun. Second, I'm really just gonna be learning to use chips. I played some poker for nickles and dimes in college and grad school, but BS - nothing serious.

So I'm gonna be one of those "online donks" who's continually trying to figure out how to bet "half the pot" and probably giving off reads left and right. They usually play two SnG's, with a third if some folks are interested. I'm taking enough to play all three, but I'm really thinking of the money as entertainment $$, not serious poker. Not that I'm gonna donk my cash off - I'm gonna try my best to dominate. But I'm really just happy to be learning, and trying to not put any pressure or expectations on myself except for learning a new style of poker.

I'll report back with what happened later tonight (if I win!) or tomorrow (if I suck).

EZ Money.

Anyway, see if you can get them to play cash. That way people can come and go as they want. Or if they do want to play tourney, try to get a higher buy-in.

They decided to play 50nl cash after one SnG. I bubbled the SnG but played OK. Had a maniac on my right (on purpose) and weaker more straightforward players to my left. I didn't really get much to work with, so I stayed alive by stealing more than my share. I didn't have to show down a hand until I went busto.

The guy who owned the house had gone busto on the second hand, so the blinds were increasing erratically - and fast. At 75 - 150, I had 1k in chips, so I raised the maniac's PFR with A8s (he would make small raises with any two - he played like 80% of the hands he got) hoping to steal some chips. A solid player was left (the friend who got me playing poker online 2.5 years ago), and he reraised all-in. At that point, I knew I was dead, but then the maniac came along. I flipped up my hand, the strong player shows AQ, and the maniac had TT. The flop is AQJ, and the maniac backdoors and 8 9 for a straight.

When they switched to cash, I played pretty well. I lost $20 on the tourney, but was quickly up $20 - $30, and drinking some beer and having fun. I was still about even on the last round, when the five players left added a live straddle of $1. I picked up KQs on the last hand and joined a raised family pot, got a JT flop, and all 5 players stayed for a $3 flop bet and a $5 turn bet (I was SB, so I check/called). So now there's $75 or so in the pot, and it's playing like limit. I catch total air and fold the river. Two guys are all-in (they're brothers), and one of them wins $100 with AJ and top pair. I finish the night up $5 at the cash game, 7 beers deep in a Coors Light 6-pack, and having an enjoyable time.

Yeah those nights are fun. I actually started in those types of games. I smoked and drank all night and went home up $100s every weekend with no idea why I was making money.

Next step: Get used to the chips and physical tells and start brutalizing poker rooms, imo.
Check out my self-deprecation here!
