My brother got married this weekend, so we went up to Atlantic City for the bachelor party on Thursday night. We did all of our gambling at Harrah's, mostly blackjack and pai gow and the other table games, but at around 3 am we decided we'd all go ahead and give the poker room a shot.

I could not believe how bad the play was. I went in there being really nervous about being new to B&M and afraid that I might get pushed around, but I think I was the only one there who really had any concept of what it takes to win at poker. (thanks ftr)

The only tables that were available that time of the night were 2/4. The first few hands I played there were about 6 limpers per hand. Not one hand got raised pre-flop. There was virtually no raising after the flop either. Lots and lots of calling.

So I get dealt KK from sb, three limpers ahead of me, I raise, bb re-raises, I re-raise him. All three limpers are still in.

Flop comes J-rag-rag, 2 spades.

I bet, 4 calls.

Turn is a rag.

I bet, 4 calls

River is a spade. I know someone hit their flush. I check.

4 checks behind me.

I show the kings, bb shows J8o, everyone else mucks.

This was a huge pot. I have no clue what the other 3 players could have possibly had. I guess two more of them could have had jacks...either way, I'm up about 50 now.

So the next hand, I'm on the button. 4 limpers ahead of me, I limp with
qj of hearts, sb folds, bb checks.

Flop comes J-rag-rag again. Everyone checks to me, I bet, get two callers.

Turn is a rag, 2 checks to me, I bet, they both call.

River is another rag, 2 checks, I bet, two calls. I'm about 99% sure I've won this hand based on the hand before, so I show my hand.

BB turns over AJ. TPTK. Not one bet or raise the entire hand. But wait - it got even better when MP1 showed KK. No raise pre-flop, no bet or raise at any point during the hand.

After that I sat there for about another half hour without anything happening and walked away up about 30.

Is this terrible play a B&M thing? I've never seen anything like it on-line. I play no-limit pretty much exclusively on-line, though. Maybe it's a limit thing. It definitely made me want to go back, and to see if I could find a higher limit table. I wonder at what level the players will start to know what they're doing.

Moral of the story-FTR rules. Probably about 4 months ago I would have been one of those other guys. I played poker my entire life, but I never really understood it till I got on here.

Yes it's really like that at the very low limit games at casinos. People are downright terrible. I've seen people pull 100's out of their pockets about every half hour and the ONLY thing they'd play is suited cards trying to catch a flush. *shudders* Some live only to catch a card at the end and 'bust' the good player(s). Nobody understands pot equity or pot odds or anything else. They mostly never think about your cards, all they do is chase chase chase.

(couple experiences I had recently at 2/4...one I had AA, raise and get a few callers, flop comes jack high, so I bet and get called, turn rag, bet get called, river rag, bet get called...one guy turns over pocket jacks...flopped top set and didn't bet or raise once...another, I've got QQ and the flop comes 234r...I actually say out loud "that's a beautiful flop" [because I know the callers with an ace are gonna be chasing me down to make a wheel]...turn and river are both 7's and I win a nice pot with queens up)

One reason I play 4/8 instead of 2/4 is because the folks at 4/8 have a clue but still aren't very good and end up donating

Same experience here with 2/4...

Went to AC a few months back and played a 30$ rebuy tourney and ended up in 14th just out of the money after putting 100$ in. Had a half hour before the wife showed up for dinner so I sat down at 2/4. Cashed out with my tourney buyin back.

I've played up to 5/10 limit and play is just as bad.

If you want to make even more money there are terrible players in the NL games too.
Send lawyers, guns and money - the sh*t has hit the fan!

ChezJ is an unknown quantity at this point
What you have to understand is that $2/$4 is the extreme low end of the B&M poker spectrum. Most of the time, there is nothing lower, so naturally that is where all the beginners get their feet wet. And by beginners, I do mean total newbies who don't even know how to post their blinds. Compare this to playing blackjack at a $5 table, which is as low as it gets, if you can even find one. People who play at a B&M casino are used to paying $5, $10, $25, or even $50 to play ONE hand of blackjack. Then they come to the poker room and OMG it's only $2 to see a flop? Hell, that's nothing to them. That's like one pull of a slot machine. These aren't people who have practiced and perfected their skills by playing thousands of hands online. Most of them have never even heard of online poker! The most they ever play is once a week in their buddy's basement. In other words, they have no skills at all. What's worse, they have traveled hundreds of miles to get to Las Vegas/Atlantic City and the last thing they want to do is fold a hand -- they came to play!

Add all this up and you can see why B&M poker is child's play compared to the online version.
