When playing in a home tourney or cash game, is it ever okay to lay down a slight favorite (say, 77 v KJ all in pf) and wait for an opportunity to get it in with better odds? I understand in online poker you can't really look at situations individually like this because your bankroll will keep you going against varience and you can just join a new table after the beat, but in a home game where you'll be sitting out the rest of the night or have to buy in again, is it EVER acceptable to just wait for a better opportunity?

I don't ask this because I don't like to gamble- but because I would rather continue to gamble throughout the night than throw it away on a coinflip.

you didnt mention stack size and your opponents' tendency, dude. Some drunk players in my casino even shove 100BB with any ace, any pairs and any broadway cards. In these situations vs such reckless gamblers, how can you not gamble with a good all-in equity hand?
Also, you need to bring in a few buy-ins and prepare to rebuy a few times.

In a cash game, positive EV is positive EV, and you should have a big enough bankroll to handle any variance that results from positive EV plays that don't pay off.

In a tournament, your chips are all-or-nothing (subject only to rebuys, which aren't always available and which are themselves precious). Thus, it can sometimes make sense to forego risky positive EV plays early in the tournament to preserve your stack. Essentially, the EV you are really concerned about is the cash prizes at the end of the tournament, and foregoing a positive EV play with respect to the EV of the size of your chip stack can be positive EV with respect to cashing in the tournament.
