I know that if three to a suit come on the board, and your opponent double checks their cards, they probably don't have the flush. But I have observed my opponents double check their cards after the flop several times, with two to a suit on the board, or with a rainbow flop. What other reasons might someone double-check their hole cards?

A bad memory becuase of an unmemorable hand. If its a limp pot which i'm sure it was, he probably has unconnected middle cards that might be suited, when he double checks it's usually becuase similiar cards have come and there's a good chance he's pair one. If he has indeed paired one, it's still a probably weak hand and he may be easily bluffed.

He may have thought he hit two pair, but probably not if he's double checking. The two pair would be a mid low pair on the board, so chances are he only has a mid pair.

most people play A-rag suited or K-rag suited, and some even play A-rag unsuited. when the flop comes up all rags, they often remember they had a rag in the hole but not which one. so they check to see if they have top rag, or some kind of ragged str8 draw.

Not trying to be a "matt damon" tell spotter but....

If they look from thier hole cards to the board more than once, they're trying to figure out what they need to make thier hand be it a flush or straight.

If someone looks at the board, checks thier hole cards and lays them back down without looking again at the board, they made the hand they thought they did.

This is from my experience. I play a house game full of newbs, myself definitely included. I have been pursuing the game alot more and I have been doing very well at this game. Now time to slowly venture out more. Anyway, just saying the type of players I have gotten this off of.

They could also be trying to give off a fake tell and already have the flush . . .

Read Mike Caro's book of poker tells for the fish basics and watch out for the better players sending off fake tells and do the opposite...

Keep an eye on that, most players in my home game double and tripple check their cards on every hand. It's when they don't that I get usefull information.

YMMV
I built my own poker table... Check It Out

I will often deliberately check my cards when I know what I am holding because some amatuer Caro's sit at the tables I play at.
There is nothing to see here, move along.

I got burned by this move one time at the B&M .... I actually quite admired the person who pulled it off on me.

From that incident onward, I always try to assimilate mutiple indicators when making a read before I make my conclusion. I learned this from reading a Dan N. article.

You have to try and piece together all the evidence and information at your disposal and see if it all points in one direction. In that one example, if I had also considered this player's past betting patterns, and compared it to the way he had played in that specific hand I may have been able to conclude that he was trying to pull a fast one on me.

I've used that move against others at every opportunity since then, and its paid off for me many times over.

Some of the guys I play with aren't great at remembering the exact suit they have, and they know the tell. So at least one of them *always* double checks his cards after the flop if he's in it - regardless of what he really has, regardless of what's in the flop.

I think that's a pretty good idea, and could be useful when playing with opponents new to me - if they think I'm working on a flush-draw and really am working a set...
Note: new guy and very open to constructive criticism, so go ahead and weigh in! I'm here to learn.

Mine's just from nervouse habit. On True Poker they let you lay you cards down an pick them up again an I'm always doing it. I pity any poor smuck that's tryin to figure out a read on me when it comest to that.
