I wanted to submit this plan to some of the more seasoned home game players for comment and/or approval..

Type of Game and Betting:
No Limit Hold 'Em, $10 max buy-in, .05/.10 blinds.

(Is the proper ratio of buy-in to blinds? Any tweaks or suggestions?)

For chips, I need to buy a bunch more, but I already have some cheap ones from Walgreens. I plan to denominate them as follows:

Chip Denominations:
White: .05 (twice as many of these as the other colors)
Blue: .10
Red: .25

(Does that sound right for the betting structure and buy-in we are playing?)

(Shoud I just use 2 colors instead of 3?)

Uhh, I guess thats it.. Anything else I need to know?

$10 buy-in period. $5 add-on allowed if you're at $5 or less.

Otherwise looks fine. Just make sure to adjust your usual Party Poker game for the bigger stacks.

You may want to raise the value of the chips. At my home games we play a $20 buy in, and $20 unlimited rebuy. We use the following chip values.
white = .25
red = .50
blue = $1.00
blinds are good to start at 1 of the smallest denomination chip and then 2x for big blind.
I would suggest raising it, we usually play for six hours give or take. so we raise the SB by a quarter every hour and a half. BB = 2x SB.

Thanks for the advice all. I don't want to raise the chip denominations and blinds, because the purpose of this game is to introduce some friends to the game of poker. Some have never played poker before, and others have played poker but never no limit. They all are very nervous about the words "no limit".

After reading Fnord's comment about size of the buy-in compared to the blinds, I was thinking of decreasing the buy-in to $5 to lower the stakes even more. I guess on Party, you have 0.25/0.50 blinds with $25 buy in, which is 50 times the big blind. So the scaled down version of that ratio would be .05/.10 with $5 buy-in. So it should be the same as the 25 NL tables on party, which is a proven model.

However, all of the online poker rooms seem to use $10 max buy in with that blind structure. Why? Does anyone see any reason why the game wouldn't work with a $5 max buy-in. Hmm, I am a little wary it could turn into no fold em hold em, but oh well.. Again, the point of this first game is to teach some new players how to play no limit

The larger the stacks are relative to the blinds the more hands like suited connectors and small pairs go up in value and hands like AK, AA, AJ etc. go down in value, as it becomes more difficult to just push most of your chips in on the flop and expect a worse hand to call.

My guess is Party does 50x BB buy-in for NL to attempt to "juice" the game and give newbies a chance not to bust out (their bankroll) too fast. However, the unintended consequence is that at in a full ring game they made it too damn profitable to sit at 8 tables at once waiting to ram and jam the shit out of big cards.

As a better player, you *want* tall stacks, and to keep 'em tall.

My $0.02

Fnord, good thoughts.

I did some poking around on the internet.. I guess the other poker rooms use 100x BB buy-in, and party is pretty much the only one that uses 50x BB buy-in. I did not realize this.

I also found a thread on a different forum in which someone expresses the exact same idea you have: that PP uses the 50x BB buy-in to inject more luck into the game, and therefore keep poor players from losing their bankroll too fast.

I think I'll stick to the 100x BB buy-in.

So blue is supposed to be higher value than red?

Karsk, something does seem to be messed up. Your post that I quoted is no longer here! You or one of the admins must have accidentally deleted it?

Actually, Tyson deleted it (as well as the chipset/Empire signup promo link to that site in another thread).

We weren't too keen on the idea of you guys linking to another site's sign-up promo.

You guys get affiliate money from Empire, too? For some reason I thought you were only assoicated with Party, like you had to choose one or the other or something.

Man that was pretty low of me, especially since I relied on the sign-up guide here to get through the process.

How does it work? I'm pretty sure I did download Empire from the link on FTR, but I used the "OTHERDUMBPOKERSITE" signup code when registering.

Not the case at all. We're affiliated with both Party and Empire. Hence, this page:

I introduced my parents and their friends to the game. Started with pennies. But now that they are comfortable playing we have a similar structure and it works well. $10 buy in $.15/.25 blinds. Seems to work well.
Send lawyers, guns and money - the sh*t has hit the fan!

In preparation for my home game, I just dug up an old "poker set" that my wife got me a long time ago, before I even started playing poker.

I remembered that the set had a couple decks of cards, and nice clay chips. But there are so few chips that I really can't use them. I went looking for the set because I wanted to use the cards which I have never opened.

Anyways, I took the two decks of cards out of the set, and guess what.. They are Kem cards! Two brand new decks of them! These are going to really class up my home game!
