Great posts man, this is really good stuff for a B&M newb. I'll be in Vegas next year and this will be useful then, and any other casino i go to.

I posted this somewhere else but I think it is more fitting here:

Quote:
The minimum at most cardrooms is 5 big bets (BBs). Sometimes it is 10BBs.
Buying in for less than 20BBs is ridiculous, however.

There is usually a typical buy in for most games.
3/6 and 4/8 is usualy 1 rack of $1 chips or $100
6/12 is 1 rack of $2 chips.
5/10 is usually also $200 (two stacks of red chips)
10/20 is usually 1 rack of $5 chips.

Buy in for the typical amount, but make sure you always have more than 5BBs in front of you. This ensures that if you make a hand, you get the most for it. If your chips start getting low, buy another rack.

I would reccomend Bringing at least 50BBs with you though, in case you start with a cold run of cards.

In No Limit, always buy in for the max (usually 50-100 times the big blind,) and bring at least 3 buy ins.

*edit: when I say "bring" I mean bring to the table. This was not advice to play outside your bankroll (at least 300 big bets) but just how much cash you should expect to have in your pocket.
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

This is great info, thanks for adding it Demi!

And there is no shame in buying in for another rack, so don't be afraid to do it provided you're keeping your overall bankroll in mind. In fact, in a 4/8 game I'd like to have $200 in front of me, but it's a bit cumbersome to go to the table with 2 racks of chips, so I buy one, but I'm ready to buy another immediately if I get to $40 or $50 of my original buy-in.
