I made a huge mistake last night in a local tournament. I hit a set of 10s on the flop and while I bet it BIG pre-flop one person called me. That scared me a bit, so I didn't bet it after the turn. I bet it again after the river and he called me again. He ended up rivering out a small straight all because I didn't bet the turn.
What was going on in my mind? The day before at a different tournament I had hit a set of K on the flop. I knew watching the board all the way through that I had the best hand. I was in late position and bet it slow (from pre-flop) to keep some others in the pot (I needed to build my stack as I went into the tournament short stacked). Each round I would bet a little more and in the end the one person remaining re-raised me. I went all-in and he called and I took the hand. My set of Kings over his set of 10s.
So as I sat there yesterday that was going through my mind. A king had hit on the flop so after the guy called me, I had the worry in my head of what if this is a repeat of that hand from the day before.
Lesson Learned: Let yesterday's hand go and play today's hand. If you've got a hand bet it.

Agreed.
Also, if you play passively worrying about set over set you are going to lose a lot of money/chips in the long run.

Every hand is a new probability event.
Try not to outguess yourself.
Unless you are playing online...then watch the patterns as they develop or they will bite hard.

Why can I not seem to learn from this mistake and stop doing it? At least 3 times in the last week I've had this same thing happen. I bet big pre-flop, someone calls me and it totally messes with me because I have no idea what they have. When this happens, I have 2 overs usually, and I'm worried that maybe they have a pocket pair and are just slow playing. So I don't bet it after the turn and just check it to the river and they river out on me.
I've got to stop letting this happen!

Math/Statistics are absolutely my weakness in this game... and math is a weakness of mine anyway. I'm trying to improve my ability to look at the board and figure out my odds.
