Along with the buying guide I posted for poker chips. Here is another route one can take if they're looking for chips.
Now everyone knows. You are definitely feel like a BIG DOG when you have nice home poker gear. I pride myself on having above average poker equipment. From Kem cards to Chips with denominations on them. It conveys a message to those that play with me. I take the game seriously.
Now, without a doubt, the ultimate in poker home gear is one's poker chips. More than the cards or table. It's the visual and tactile stimulation of the poker chips that give us our sense of satisfaction. I mean really. Who doesn't have half a woody when they rake in a huge pile of chips? Or the small joy we derive from chip tricks? That's why we always ask for an opinion about what chips to get.
Well another thing that can set you apart from your friends are if you have chips that have a personal touch to them. There are a ton of generic chips that people can buy. Makes it very easy to slip chips into a home game when they're of the generic variety. That's why people who have the funds buy personalized poker chips. To help prevent against cheating as well as showing that they are serious poker players. It really can be a status symbol.
At the pinnicle of personalization is custom made clay chips. Bookoo expensive  . And if you can, then by all means, buy them. This post is about another known, but not often discussed method of personalization. Laser printed poker chip labels.
That's right you heard me. Poker chip labels off a laser printer. Well the first questions that are asked are how good are they? From personal experience. I can say that with todays quality printers. You are getting a great product. No smudging unless you are really trying to destroy the label on purpose. There are even sealers that can be purchased to futher protect the printed item.
Just for the sake of having an example. I'm only going to post one link. Most poker chip labels can be gotten on ebay for great prices. It really is a little niche field. So vendors have to stay competitive as far as pricing goes.
One thing you definitely want to look for in labeling a chip is to make sure the chip has a recess. This way the label can be flush with the chip. If not, no biggie. You'll just have to adjust how the chips fit into the carrying case. When I had my 11.5 "dice" chips. I bought labels for them. And they really made the chips stand out.
So for all those that want to add a personal touch to their chips, but don't have the funds for custom clays. Give this a shot. Cheers. :P

I took your advise and went shopping. With the poker craze there are competition in the Label market. I found {solicitation URL removed by Xianti}. I ordered a set of Texas Holdem chips because I have never seen them and when I got them.... Wow.. I was impressed. The labels are laser printed and the designs are a much better quality... Take a look.
As I say, Chips are nice. But if there is nothing on them to give them flavor, What's the use???

is the paper just glued on, or is there some sort of protective layer covering them?

The labels are just like stickers with a very strong adhesive. Most laser printed labels resist smudging to some degree, but the oils our bodies secrete and different circumstances can wear away the ink.
There is a special spray that you can apply to the labels that prolong the life of the labels. Another circumstance is just how often you actually use the chips. If you only play live occasionally then they should last you a lifetime.

krylon is the recommended overspray (kind of like polyurethane).
remember, no matter what people say, they DO get ratty eventually, so plan on having to strip and reapply another set at somepoint (depends on hours of play and the respect of your players).
