do you ever do it, when, and why?
I check in the dark sometimes to hopefully give aggressive players pause in HU pots. I hate playing out of the blinds in raised pots but I also hate giving up the best hand. I think it can sometimes neutralize positional disadvantage if you don't do it all the time.

I never do it. I understand what you are saying about table image, but I have to think the effect that it has in that regard is minor. Meanwhile, you are giving up your ability to play whatever the optimal betting strategy is based on the cards that actually hit the board and your opponent's tendencies.

HU pots oop suck, that's why I don't play them. When playing HU I fold most hands in the BB, and if I do play them, I 3b most.
Its not that much different in ring games online. I don't think I can profitably call a CO open from the blinds with 77, but I think I can profitably raise.
Live I just tend to fold more oop, simply because a 3b isn't going to have a lot fold equity and I'll just be playing a bloated pot oop.
I'd just avoid HU pots oop like the plague.
In spots that can be profitable... say BTN opens, you call with KJo from the bb... I would just look for good board structures to c/r - if he's capable of folding.
Donk betting can be good sometimes, but I rarely do it because it tends to confuse the opponent and in turn it will be harder to narrow down his range...
It's good to take mental notes if someone gave a lot of respect to donk bets or c/c, donk turn or c/r - lines.
Last week I played a hand that was kind of interesting. BTN raises. We've played maybe 20h in the past month. He thinks I'm very tight - which is true, but only against über-mega fish. I called his open from the blinds with 45s (we're almost 400bb deep) and c/raised a KKT 2-tone board, and barrelled an A turn and he folded Kx face up pretty quickly... I wanted him to fold JJ+, Tx... but I take that too
If you play selectively aggressive you can get a ridiculous amount of fold equity with the right lines on the right boards.

Try getting dealt AA on SB and 3 bet preflop with 2+ callers and announce you are checking in the dark. Then jam it on the flop when someone fires a bullet into a dry flop. ROFL
Checking in dark is a real funny one... I am yet to see anyone do this with a strong starting hand so generally I find that it projects a lot of weakness. That or maybe the players down under and just too stupid to mix up strategy like this....
