I'm pretty new to Texas Holdem, and I really need to develop reading skills for live play. I pretty much hate online play.

Has anyone noticed a tell in whether a player says 'check' or knocks on the table?

I just started thinking about it and I was going to look at it when I played again.

I would think, a person wouldn't say check if they were bluffing. They wouldn't want anyone to hear their voice.
A person with a strong hand would give a simple knock on the table, try to look calm, not draw much attention.

Anyone in their homegames do this?

Good observation. From dealing, I've found verbal checks to be much weaker checks than physical checks.

The verbal check seems to mean - "my hand is so bad I'd rather expend the least amount of effort to check it possible."

Renton will become famous soon enough
tells are over-rated. I wouldn't get too hung up on them. Good players (even live) rely more on betting patterns and recall, and generally use physical tells as tiebreakers when they're unsure what to do.

I agree with Renton. Usually you'll pick up on the betting pattern and then start to pay attetion to physical movement or actions. If I have like 2nd to the nuts and I can't tell what the guy is doing I will just raise and that will tell you real quick what is going on, but watch it some guys put on a little drama show and then push back on you. Usually something like "uhhhhh welllll pppfffff I guess I'm all in"
No man can soar higher than he able to think
