I'm moving over to San Fransisco to study after the summer, and would be interessed in hearing if there are any good Casinos in the area. Would be nice to know what types of games and limits they have, what the players are like and so on. Also if anyone have some tips for stuff to do or not to do going for your first time ever to a casino, that would be cool to hear about too. There are none here in Norway where I live now, so I've never been one.

I live in Petaluma CA right now (45 mins north of SF) and i've been to 3 casinos and 1 cardroom in the area. The games are usually very good, but the half hour fees can be nasty ($6/half hour), and i'm not 100% sure if they rake the pots or not as well. A lot of the NL games are geared towards the gamblers, (i.e. $2-5 blinds with $100max buyin, $5-10 with $300 max, it's a joke, but still pretty easy if you adjust).

my advice, don't just look on mapquest for casinos, it doesn't list them all. Look in the phone book and try to get local information and stuff, I guarantee there are some good games in the area if you find them.

As far as casino etiquette goes, just try to relax. Your poker face is gonna become more important, but even then, some players totally misread you anyways, so it evens out. I've been in games where 1-2 guys were talking mad shit the whole time, so I just ignored it, played my game, and came out on top.
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

There are a number of card rooms within the Bay Area. There are four main card rooms accessible by public transportation Bart or Caltrains. Lucky Chances is in Colma and there is a Bart station there and they have free pick up every half hour or its 15-20 minutes to walk off your nerves. The more popular games there are 1-3 limit and 1-1-2 spread limit 100 max buy in 6/half hour. They also have tourny's nearly every day that start at 10:30 and buy-ins are 50-100 usually. The NL game there can be ridiculosly loose 10-20xBB openings and all-in preflop or flop is not uncommon. For the most part you will come across aggressive players and find yourself in a lot of No Fold Em games.

There are a few others such as Oaks -near the Emeryville Bart Station which is similiar to Lucky's sans pick up and about the same walking time. And there is also Casino San Pablo off the Richmond Bart Line but they don't have free pick up either so you'd have to cab it. Artichoke Joe's has one of the better reputations but I haven't been able to get down there as of yet and they are just off the Cal Train Line. I also hear there are 12 busses daily out of China Town that head up to River Rock Casino.

Here is a list of the closest card rooms. Overall there are about 20 card rooms/casinos that are within public transportation or a 1-2 hour drive.

You can also find some reviews of card rooms if you go to yelp.com.
And this link has info on a number of card rooms in the area as well. http://california.casinocity.com/

Bay 101 in San Jose is pretty much the only card room I have been to in the bay area ( I live in the central valley, but work in Livermore), aside from a couple very small card rooms in Livermore. It's OK , but cash limit games is not my thing. Very huge place, and very very busy most weekends and nights. Out here in the valley, I have played at Jackson Rancheria where they have 3-6 limit, and 1-2 NL (100 max buy in). At the NL table, I found several players to be really bad-

Thanks a lot for the tips and info, I'll try out the different places mentioned when I get there and see how it goes. Looking forward to my first live casino experience, I'm sure everyone will think I'm a huge fish.
