As I walked up to the $40/80 table, I looked around at the current players, and realized there was only one tough player sitting. I quickly envisioned cashing out with 4 to 5 racks at the end of a long, aggressive, dominating session…
WOOPS!
They were all going to be at my mercy, not knowing what hit them. Didn’t they know who I was? I studied, practiced, wrote about, talked about, and debated about poker every waking moment. I felt sorry for what was about to happen to these poor, unassuming players…
WOOPS!
I was absolutely correct: The session was long, aggressive, and dominating… and I DID have 4 to 5 racks in front of me… the problem was that I bought all of those racks, and they were never in front of me at the same time!
Some would say, “I just had a bad day…. I just got super unlucky.” That is a bold-faced lie! I lost because I thought I was SUPPOSED to win. My ego made me believe I was ENTITLED to win. I was the best at the table, damnit, which means my opponents are supposed to hand their chips over to me—didn’t they know this?
The only thing we’re entitled to are cards, chips, and the right to fire them as we wish!

Why? I was beating myself up for starting the session super-cocky! Phil thinks he's the best, and never admits when he's not.
I was a moron for the attitude I brought to the table, rather than playing egoless, and with total respect for my opponents.
Total opposite of Phil-- maybe I didn't explain myself good enough.

I think he means your initial stance was like PH. The fact you realized you were wrong makes you different.

*EVERYBODY* thinks they are better at poker than they really are. This is true with the great players, beginners, and everybody inbetween. I'm sure exceptions exist........... but I personally have not witnessed it.
Personally, I play better (i.e. more fearless and more aggressive) when I have some confidence. Cockiness is bad though. (Those are equally good life lessons as well.)
Then there's that whole running bad part...

I loved the way you told the story - absolutely brilliant - really laughed at the point about the 4 - 5 stacks of chips.
