i am building a poker table this week and i need some opinions on what kind of felt to buy. i want to keep it under about $40, and from what i can see that is about right for some of the mid-range felts. any suggestions on what is the best type in that price range? i seen "velveteen", "speed cloth", and wool felt. any experiences or opinions?

speed cloth will work, so will velveteen.

I believe wool felt will "pill" up on you. Ever get those little beads on a sweater? Also don't use "felt" like you would buy in a cloth store.

I used "felt" from Wal-Mart and it worked just fine. I can email pics to anyone who doesn't believe. We use it every weekend. 7.49 for the "pretenda felt" and 3.76$ for the "pad" under it.

thanks for the reply, but i don't think i want to build this big nice table and put some wal-mart crap underneath my kems. i've used the fabric store crap, i'm upgrading now and i want something with a little more casino feel to it. that stuff always seemed to make a bunch of little lint balls and pill up on me. seemed like we were getting a new sheet every third tourney. but if it works for you, great.

If you want somethign nice then speed cloth will work great. So will "pool table" felt.

If you wanted to be super hipster, you'd use astroturf or putting green (fake, not real grass...what am I insane?)

maybe just a little insane..
might be hard to get the kems to slide across the table top with astro tuff..

Not to mention the turf burn from raking all those big pots

how about that super turf stuff, that's got all the feel of real grass, but it's fake. helps prevent turf toe. hate to be on IR for the tourney.

I bought some velveteen for my table. Cards slide great on it.

I use speed cloth. Just remember to have a way to remove the felt so you can clean it after a rowdy night of poker.

what plan did you use to accomplish that fyrfytr? we are going to staple the felt into the center peice of the table with a racetrack of wood around the oustside. it will be easy to remove the felt section when the felt needs to be replaced, but other than staples, what other methods are there to make it easy to remove the felt?

Well some people just do that. Take out the staples carefully so as not to rip the fabric, wash the fabric and re-staple when done.

The fabric I have has a sewn in drawstring. So I can pull it tight around the wood.

Others I've seen have what basically amounts to a fitted bed sheet. with elastic around the edges for a tight fit.

Of the three ways. Restapling will give you a tighter fit, but the elsastic is the easiest. My draws strings work great for covering a whole table, but if you have the felt area as an insert. You'd have to have clearance for the cinch of the drawstring.

Niether would cost very much to have done to the fabric. All you'd have to do is make sure the padding is glued to the wood.

Still others just let their tables take a beating and put new fabric on when the time comes. Which to me is not very cost effective.

what about scotchguarding the felt and using like a lint roller to clean up the felt. i have used scotchguard on furniture and stuff, and it seems to work very well. would the same principle work on felt?

I would assume so. Give it a shot and let us know how it works out.

I have scotchguarded my felt, and use a lint roller to clean it before tournaments, and it works fine. But I also do not allow drinks on them and have my tables covered when not in use.

cool, that's what i think i will do. the table i am going to build has a racetrack of wood around the outside and i'm going to have drop in drink holders in that racetrack as to keep the spillage to a minimum. got the wood today and tomorrow we start cutting. let you guys know how it turns out. in the meantime, it's home game night tonight. should have a bigger turnout than usual so i hope to come up and take it all.
