I'll be headed out to LV in November with my brother and our wives, and I'm planning to play at the Bellagio.

I have found a room at the Venetian for about $215 a night and will be checking the Bellagio for the poker rate tomorrow, but I was more concerned about shopping and other entertainment for the wives.

Any tips on the value of staying where you are playing? I have done this in the past, and it seemed to be of some value, but I don't have anything else to compare it to.

I have stayed at the Mirage before, so I am familiar with the stuff to do in and near the Venetian. If the Bellagio poker rate is close to the Venetian rate of $215, which is a better place to keep our wives busy and happy (and off our backs)?

I am open to other suggestions as well. The room needs to be kind of nice, though.

Okay, that dumb post aside...

I think the rates are very similar. Entertainment is very similar too as far as shopping, music, spas, etc are concerened. So stay where you plan on playing to make things convienent on you. She will enjoy it and won't know any different. And if she gets bored, a walk on the strip to someplace else is always fun anyways. And in the grand scheme of things cabs are cheap too.

ChezJ is an unknown quantity at this point
there are some limited benefits of playing where you stay. one is that if the casino offers a poker room rate, you can get a huge discount on the room by simply playing 5 hours a day in the poker room.

the other is that in some casinos where the poker room has a long waiting list, you can call to get added to the list and chill out in your room until they call to tell you you're up. not all casinos offer this service, but i'm quite sure the high end ones like wynn and bellagio do.

on the whole, though, i don't think you are going to find a "bad" hotel room on the strip. but you will certainly find much cheaper ones. i stayed at the tropicana last year for like $35 a night and it was perfectly fine. had a gorgeous view of the strip from the top (22nd) floor and loved it. i'm not recommending the trop in your case, merely noting that the cheap rooms are not necessarily bad at all.

i spent my honeymoon at paris which was great because it has a nice pool, nice rooms, great views of the bellagio fountain, and shopping in house as well as at all the neighboring casinos. but it's about half as much as the bellagio.

in your case maybe mandalay bay would be a good choice, since it has the spa, the beach pool, shopping, and an aquarium, as well as a poker room where you can probably get good hotel comps.

I think the Bellagio would work well for your situation. For one, at the Bellagio, I think you have more flexibility than being over at the Wynn, as far as your poker playing is concerned. You've got the Bellagio room itself (unless you want to play 1-2 NL, or 2/4 or 3/6 limit, you'll find the game you want there), the Alladin right across the street (not that good for higher limits), the Monte Carlo (which you can get to by a tram behind the Bellagio - ask about it, it's kind of hidden in their new wing), Paris across the street, and the MGM not too far away.

Similarly, the location would give your wife a lot of options. The Bellagio itself has tons of shops, along with the Alladin (now in the process of becoming The Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino), which actually has reasonably priced stores (as opposed to the Bellagio, or Wynn). Also, the Forum Shoppes at Caesars (newly expanded if you haven't been there in a while) aren't that far from the Bellagio, either. So between the Bellagio, Caesars, and the Alladin, that's a lot of shopping options for you.

Also, on a nice day, the MGM/New York/New York area is not that long a walk at all (or a short cab ride). I'm not that familiar with the shopping, etc., in that area, but I am sure there's plenty to do, at least for an afternoon.

Don't forget Fashion Show either. LV is awesome for shopping and keeping the wives/girlfriends/SOs busy. I usually advise to just stay wherever you want (and the wifey wants), she can take a cheap cab anywhere to go shopping. Chances are she'll want to visit all the hotspots anyway, so the actual location isn't a real factor.

For the record, even though Bellagio is my main gambling spot, its shopping area is a bit smaller than most. It's limited to basically Armani, Chanel, Tiffany's, Dior, YSL, Hermes, Fendi, Prada, and one or two other shops I'm forgetting (thank god my girlfriend isn't a fan of most of them... heh) It's a great selection as far as quality, but you'll get a much better spread at other locations. As mentioned previously though, the Forum Shops are essentially just across the street from the end of the Bellagio shops.
