I'm going to play live NL ring for the second time in a few weeks. I read through the tips & FAQ sticky and still have a few questions.
1) If I lose $50 on a hand in a game with $200 max buy-in and want to buy back up to the max, do I just tell the dealer and the chip runner will bring them to me? What if it's a weird amount, like $64, round it off to $50 or $60?
2) Should I protect my cards at all times, or just at showdown? Is my hand at risk of being killed if my cards are face down, behind the line?
3) When do you discuss chopping with the players to your right and left? Only when the situation arises, or right when you sit down?
I realize these are super-noob questions... thanks in advance.

1) You can top off your stack to the maximum at any time you're not actually in a hand. You don't have to say anything to the dealer. I would go ahead and get more chips than the max buy-in and keep them in your pocket or whatever for when you need them.
2) Keep your cards protected at all times. If other cards hit your hand (when other people are mucking), the dealer touches them, etc. then your hand is dead unless you protect them. A couple chips will suffice.
3) I'd just discuss chopping when/if it comes up.

actually these are quite intelligent questions.
re your first question, the answer will depend on the house rules and the gaming laws of the state/city. some jurisdictions do not allow cash on the table to be in play. some cardrooms do not allow dealers to sell chips to players, so you have to use the chip runners. so just ask the dealer when you sit down or whenever this situation arises... it's their job to tell you the rules, and there's nothing embarrassing about it since each house has different rules. what's more embarrassing is not asking and then losing money or losing an opportunity to make more money because you were unaware of the house rules.
re protecting cards, do it at all times, like the other guy said.
re chops, some houses do not allow chop. some houses rake the jackpot drop from the small blind, so chopping is meaningless. again, ask the dealer about the house rules on chopping.
