Say you have 6-8 people and about 4 hours to play poker.
Would you have two 2-hour tournaments, or one 3-4 hour tournament. Are either of these realistic? Does anyone have a similiar situation?
I'm guessing if you just did one tournament, it would have to be Rebuys and Addons in order to make it last that long..

I'd have one tournament and whatever time you have left I'd run a ring game.

I probably would not try two 2 hour tournaments, unless you had people that could stretch their time to 5 to 6 hours to play (just in case 1 or both run a little long). If you have 5 hours, you could probably do 2 tournaments with aggressive blinds.
I would suggest you increase your starting chip amount to T2000 or T2500 (you had T1000 before) but keep the same blind structure. Try that, and see how long it takes. You could also increase the length of the first couple of blind levels...ie if you were raising blinds every 20 minutes, have the 1st level last 30-40 minutes, and the 2nd level last 30 minutes, then the rest are the 20 minute duration.
If want you could offer 1 re-buy/addon within the first hour, that way everyone will be able to play for at least the first hour. If you do the re-buy/addon I would make your starting chips T1500 and the addon/re-buy be T1000.

You could have two tournies provided you keep the blinds to a reasonable amount of time. And limit the breaks in between rounds. I just played a two tourney home game this past Saturday. We started around 7pm and finished around 12am. And that was with breaks. We had 20 min. blinds and went to 15 once it got heads up. (Came in 2nd both times )

Great suggestions guys. I've been kicking this around all weekend. I was thinking about offering 1 rebuy or addon in the first hour, and also increasing the starting chips to 1500. And then I come on here and see that this is exactly what JesGru is suggesting!
I think that is probably the route I will take, although I have a feeling that most of the players I play with would rather play two tournaments. Oh well, they can host their own if thats what they want to do.

Jes, what is your suggestion for how the rebuy/addon should work? Does everyone get one of each, or does everyong get either one or the other. Can you use your add-on at any time? Or just during the break after the first hour?

I would only allow one rebuy for the first round with an addon at the end of the first round. Only if not to discourage reckless play.

So would you allow a Rebuy AND an add-on at the end of the round for a player that busted out?

Well you can do it one of two ways.
1. You can make it that in order to qualify for the addon. You must still have a chip and a chair.
OR......
2. If they are busted. They can only get the addon if they already rebought once. Which would essentially be a second rebuy for them. At least they won'y have to sit around and pout for being a crappy player.
No matter what. You must set a low chip qualification for a rebuy. Like 200 chips or less depending on the starting total. That early in the tourney you gotta set it low.

FyrFytr offers good advice, as usual.
This is what I have done and it was worked out really well.
Level 1 is 40 mintues (this allows us to get get new players and dealers in the flow)
Level 2 is 30 minutes
Level 3+ are all 20 minutes
Each Player is allowed one and only one re-buy/addon. A player that busts out in the 1st level can re-but during the break or they can wait until the break between 2nd and 3rd (I do not allow rebuys mid level). Anyone that has not rebought, can addon during the break between 2nd and 3rd.
Allowing one and only one rebuy/addon, allows each player to have the same amount of chips for the tournament.
If you allow a rebuy for players that busts out, and then also offer them a addon, I feel this promotes reckless play, as players may go All-in right before the re-buy period ends, knowing that they can rebuy and then also addon later.

Here's one other way of discouraging reckless play that my friends and I have used before.
If a player busts out and wants to rebuy. He can, but the rest of the table also gets the same amount of chips themselves for free. This way that early in the game, reckless players have to take into consideration that they are giving thier opponents more chips. Which makes it harder for them to try thier kamakazi tactics, because they can never truly double up without making other players stronger.
Just an idea.
