The day before yesterday I saw a tilting high stakes player on 25/50...he was pushing gutshots and any pair, and playing almost every pot. I had a roll of 50k, so he's really out of my roll, but I decide to risk 3 buyins (15k). I won't bother you with details of the beats I recieved, but 5k went on the line 3 times with me as a heavy favourite (his best chance was 28%, lowest 10%), after which I decided I didn't want to loose any more and left.

Thoughts? Would you have done the same? Would you have bought in short instead? (note that he wasn't pushing pf he was pushing flops-- 5k into pots of 300-400, which means with a 5k stack you can fold a lot and wait for top pair AND a flush draw or 2-pair or trips to call)...

Somehow I reasoned that if you are going to gamble, and you can afford to loose the cash, this is 2 good an opportunity to pass up. But then, this does force me to move down in stakes again... ...easy come easy go I guess.

I think calculated gambles like these are the best way to make a bankroll grow quickly, but not everyone has the discipline to handle the variance that comes with it.

Sounds to me like you saw a great opportunity and took it and even though things didnt work out as planned you did fine (good work on stopping after 3 buyins).

If i was a pro i probably wouldnt do this, but if i could afford to take a shot like this i would do it and not regret it no matter what the outcome.

Sound reasoning IMO.

You recognized a +EV situation. You set yourself a reasonable limit. You had the discipline to step down in limits since it didn't go well. Fine by me.
TheXianti: (Triptanes) why are you not a thinking person?
