Here is a hand that illustrates the importance of position in NL holdem. If you have position and are willing to represent a good hand it become very profitable to raise in late position. Think about it what will people limp with in Middle to late position? Crappy hands! so take there money I make a lot of bb/100 hands in NL holdem by "stealing" weak limpers money. Just make sure that you are willing to invest some money on the flop...if your not then maybe NL holdem isn't for you.

I love this kind of play from late position, especially with suited connectors. It sucks when you get raised there, but it won't happen that often.

Here is a example of how to represent a Small Blind Special out of the small blind. And the check raise screams I have top 2 pair or set and need to protect my hand. Plus if I get called I have 8 outs as an insurance policy.

For the first hand, I have some questions about strategy since these scenario come up:

If somebody reraises you big do you fold every time?
If somebody raises you small do you fold or play it out?
If someobdy min-raises or calls and you don't improve your hand but figure they don't either, do you proceed to raise again to continue the bluff?

I do this seldom in ring games since the blinds don't go up. In tourny play, this works well. Even if people know you are playing your position they will fold because they don't want to find out the hard way.

So, you are playing $1/$2 almost exclusively and making that kind of money? I get smoked in ring games at .25/.50.

This kind of play isn't going to work nearly as well in the games with .25/.50 blinds. Your best bet there is to make a big hand and get it paid off.
TylerK: its just gambling if i want to worry about money i'll go to work lol

Too many fish, too many calling stations in the .25/.50 games. It's good for monster hands, bad for bluffing. Move up to .50/1.00 or higher to see bluffing and hand-repping pay off. Of course you still have to pick your spots, and the right (tight) opponents.

I'm starting to think playing lower limit Ring Games is going to make your poker skill development suffer. Anyone can wait for top hands and go AI at any level. But it's the position play and pot stealing (among other things) that set players apart and helps you perform well even when the cards aren't optimal. You can't really progress or profit at lower limits with the low blinds and calling stations.

Am I off base here? If I'm not, time to cash in some stocks and move up to $1/$2 with a higher bankroll. Plus, I know to leave the table if a guy name acesup86 shows up.

I dominated the lower level NL ring games before I moved up I suggest you do the same. There is a lot to learn playing nl25 and nl50 wait tell you have mastered those before moving up

It's just a different game. You spend more time exploiting statistical advantages because of how often you are called by marginal hands. You spend much less time bluffing, using position, and running psychological ploys - because the true fish don't understand those things. And most of the true fish are on the lower blinds. Money can be made at both types of tables, and skills can be learned, but the money comes in differently and the skills aren't quite the same (though they overlap).

Maybe I just suck at ring games. The only time I play them is to earn deposit bonuses. I lose the bonus before I get it.

each one is more different than you would think. I play in .1/.2, i would say i'm at the point where i crush .1/.2, just waiting on a little more br to move to .25/.5. there are a lot of nuances that separate .05/.1 and .1/.2. i've played in .25/.5 before, and it seems like there are some differences there i've noticed too. I don't think skipping steps would be a good idea.

I think in .25/0.5 you exploit peoples stupidity. With 1/2 you exploit peoples intelligence more. Obviously there are exceptions, but its all about getting a feel for your opponents and playing accordingly.

I always think that any poker experience is good if you try to learn something from it.

Hand 1 (steal with 78s): very nice. I usually make a 4xbb raise preflop when I do this, and then maybe 3/4 pot on the flop. I get worried when more than 1 person calles preflop though.

Hand 2 (AA vs. KK): Gotta push that flop. He could just as easily have AK.

Hand 3 (garbage semi-bluff): lol. Tip of the cap to you. I just don't have it in me to pull off that kind of play. And I don't know if it would be wise to at the $50 NL 6-max tables.

Hand 4 (layed down JJ): I'm totally pushing here. Keep in mind that even if he does have AKs, you still have the pot odds to make betting +EV compared to folding. My only concern would be QQ-AA.

The thing is he had QQ-AA so it was a good fold I am 100% certain I was beat.

How is his play here bad? Do you not like it because he cold-called pf and then folded to aggression on the flop that probably didn't hit him? With a decent hand, I might have done the same thing. I don't see what the problem with his play was here.

And to the subsequent hand... Woulda been sweet, eh?

Definitely smells like a boat, tens or nines high. Unless he flopped a lucky flush - but most guys wouldn't bet that flop if they had the flush.

Quad sixes or flopped a straight? but it seems very unlikely he'd still be in that hand with 78... unless he's been taking notes off of you. Could he possibly have been so passive with KK or AA?

No kidding. I would have had all my money in that pot before the flop. You get re-raised in that situation, you really need to get all your chips in quickly.

That's just... the worst. Funny enough, I was actually thinking about this today when I folded QJ suited to a lot of pre-flop aggression, and was wondering how often a royal gets folded in situations like that. I'm sure a lot of the weaker hands here (KQ, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, and JT) get folded routinely to big raises... but it's such a small chance they will hit, of course.

At least he raised with it pre-flop. I've run into like three different guys in the last few days who routinely limped high pairs, QQ-AA. A couple times I ended up hitting straights or two pair and took a lot of money. Today though, a guy put in no raise with AA and ended up in a five-way pot... but he flopped his set and then his slowplay instincts served him well, unfortunately.

Question for you Aces. I play $10 or $25 no limit tables and this type of play works granted my raises and bets are big enough to scare them off thier draw/small hand which usually takes a bit more chips (relative to the big blind that is).

I can tell when to get out of a hand but up against a calling station what do u do?

If they call or check/call on the flop ill do different things depending on what the turn is.

If the turn is a scary card (scary if they dont have it) Ill bet out again from 1/2 to whole pot depending on pot size. if they call that the river is a check/fold from me.

if the board pairs, check/fold

if it's a card that doesnt help but not a scary card that would help me push them out, im check/folding again.

Is this a correct strategy?

Up against a calling station you have to just show them down the best hand.... Ive tried it all. Betting the pot betting small going all in none if it works against a stubborn calling station who is convinced that you are "stealing" My advide would be too just show them the best hand...Once they call the flop bet it means they are thinking "I have something, or think you have nothing" At that point if you have something good keep betting if not check and try and spike a card.
