villian is tight and solid. if he was paying attention, i just got caught on another table (there were only 4 running at the time) firing 3 barrels with nothing. my river push was picked off by 3rd pair so he might think im on tilt or being too aggressive in general.

i bet this flop about 80% of the time, but decided to check to keep the pot under control. his riverbet seemed like a value bet, but i didnt think he would bet so small with a set. ive seen him make some of these smallish riverbets but none of them were showndown. i pushed thinking he never had me beat here, he might fold AK OR he might call with AQ. either way, i win. also, he instacalled the turn if that means anything. thoughts?

I think you're better off check-raising the river to like $2200 or just betting like $1400 yourself, unless you really feel he has AK here a lot in which case I like it. But I think you get more value from AQ/AJ by checkraising a smaller amount or just betting 2/3 pot on the river.

I don't like this huge overbet too much, unless you are pretty sure he knows that you're crazy. I think you really gotta have a loose titly image for this to work, there is always a small chance he has something pretty after all.

Why did you check the river to begin with? Were you afraid you might be behind, then his bet sizing convinced you otherwise? I think his fast turn call usually is a weak made hand looking to showdown.

incredible. poker at the highest level. you bet allin just to try and get him out of the pot if he also has AK. that must be a pretty strong read.
is there no chance that he has a set or better?
are really that convinced that he also has AK and not AQ?

Don't aggressive players at high levels play more hands UTG than simply AK+? Obviously you can't underestimate the importance of position but doesn't it make you hella easy to read if you only bet the top 3% of hands UTG? At this kind of level I'd have thought you could make opening with 86o UTG +EV if you're playing top-notch poker but maybe I'm wrong.

those things are all consideration but if you play alot of hands UTG then you will be frequently out of position and good players will put you in tough spots way too often

I definately don't think that at higher stakes weak hands like 86o are +EV UTG, the better the other players are the harder it is to play weak hands out of position. If you are a great player, and the stacks are deep, raising a hand like 86o UTG might be +EV, but in most cases not. I don't know if that's what you mean though, just wanted to point that out. You raise weak hands like that now and then to mix it up and make it harder for your opponent to put you on a hand, but in most cases playing solid tight aggressive out of position and loose aggressive in position is the way to go.
