without a read, isn't this just a story of you calling down and crossing your fingers?

This was my 3rd hand at the table, with an ok holding with position, and opp had been caught in two big bluffs the two previous hands (he busted his whole stack a few hands later on a pure bluff as well). I figured an overpair re-reraised me on the flop, and the diamonds would check raise the turn. But also knew that only a better hand would call my reraise, so it was best (and probably most +EV) to just call down and fold if more non-ace overcards came (figuring he could have JT QT or KT)

This is a very standard play, again the villian does a "action stopper raise" you have currently the best hand, play for whatever value you can extract.

I play the exact same way. Good call down regardless of the results...
