I think he's holding either two clubs or A5. Not sure which.

Kinda looks like a pocket pair to me like 88-jj, that thinks you are bullshitting and don't have the ace. Really though it is read dependant, if he plays Ax i'd be more inclined to just put him on the ace, in which case i call becuas he probably raises most aces that beat me and i pay off A5, A4.

maybe 2c3c and hit is gutshot. He also might have missed and is bluffing at it (which would require a good read to call). With a 9 kicker I probably lay it down

Youre not ahead of many hands besides a bluff. I'd wait until I had this fish in a better place before squeezing him. And Im sure he'll be giving you plenty more better places.

I think you're right, Smackin. I let this one go. He didn't show, no idea what he had.

And hell, giving up a couple winning hands to huge bluffs once in a while is ok too. If you called every big river bet with marginal holdings you'd be broke so good job.

I agree completely with that theory. I'd rather fold to the occasional big bluff than chase after big pots and lose. I would guess that if you called every suspicious overbet that came along, you'd be losing money and not making it - although you'd make some chronic bluffers really nervous along the way. I think I will keep to my current practice, which is to never call a big overbet like that unless I have a specific read on the player doing the betting.

Am I assuming too much when I rule out 44 in a case like this? A surprise boat at the end is going to want a call ... what's in the pot now, $6 maybe? A guy charging that pot often cannot beat TPTK.
In this case you don't have TPTK so it's a decent laydown.
