what do you think of using chat?

I often like to have a chit chat with others, this may not be a good idea as it is no doubt distracting... My housemate wont use chat cos he doesnt wana give anything away.

I think sometimes chat can help you manipulate your OP for example, he raises river with 2pair when 4to straight or flush is on (which he is semi-representing but you have) - you say 'I dont belive you' and re-raise or push: Now he thinks you dont have the possible draw and is more likely to call.

I just hit a FH vs a straight, pushed at river and he went into time-then came out of the woodworks to say: fh?

i quickly responded: huh?

then he calls

The use of chat makes up a little for the lack of being able to see physical tells... (or give fake physical tells) I say go ahead and use it if it gives you an advantage in a hand. Some ways I've used it:

"I guess I'll gamble", and push all in with the nuts (kind of an obvious one, but works sometimes against the fishies)

"How high is your diamond?" When three or four to a flush is showing, someone bets into you big, and you have the nut flush

"Sorry man..." Right before I make a huge overbet bluff at the river (Someone thought I was raising too much and buying pots and decided to fight back... my sorry comment got them to fold)

"Take it easy with the big bets, geez..." (mixed in with some long pauses) When someone is betting into me, and I'm calling them down with trips or something

"Nice Bluff" before folding, can sometimes get them to show you their cards, which gives you information for the future. If they don't show, they probably were bluffing.

"You're killing me, I can't catch shit, I'm getting outdrawn on every hand..." All give your opponents a subconcsious message that you're weak, scared or just having bad luck.

The game is all about giving "dis-information", and using chat is just one more way to do so. But actually I don't do this very often, just every once in a while.

When I have to lay down a good hand I know is beat I toss in a "queen high good?" into the chat. The fishies like that one.

I personally don't like to use any chat, I think giving them nothing is better than trying to mess with their head. You give them something and they may pick up a little about you that you didn't want them to know.

I agree with you for the most part, and that's why I don't use chat that often... BUT
Only tell them things that you want them to know.

Ooohh I just thought of another one, I love telling people that I'm drunk or high, and then play foolishly for a few hands. Sure way to get action when you need it. "I'm so drucking funk, I got four of a kind already!" (preflop)

The best chat used against me when I was a n00bie was this:

I had AJ suited, and called a raise to see the flop.
Flop A, 9, 7 rainbow.
I bet and he just calls, so on the turn (a 5) I bet bigger.
He types "STOP BLUFFING!!" and pushes all in.
Of course he has the straight.

But I always thought this was brilliant, because it evokes the reaction: I wasn't bluffing, but now if I fold it's like admitting I was bluffing, which I wasn't.

I'm still waiting for the right moment and opponent to try this one on someone else.

If you want to mess with people tell them what you have. You'll be surprised how often they don't believe you. I like to say what I have, then show them that I wasn't lying. It puts the mind funk on them.

you could use chat to get a tell on EXACTLY what the op wants to do:

"auto check"
(then check)...
"fold"
(then fold)...
"anyone know what the point is in this text-play feature!?"

later...

"OP > auto check"
....
(op later checks)

this rule, IMHO, is meant for multiway pots. if you are heads up, what does saying what you have really matter?

if the tables talkative, i don't mind talking, but i rarely will break through a silent table to say something about a hand. The only time i will is basically if i'm trying to see/get them to reveal their hand at the end.

but, the other night at 6 max, i got qq. end up on the river with all unders, guy to my right bluffs AI and i call. He immediately rebuys, next hand I have KK in the BB and say "nice bluff..." immediately. folds to him, he pushes

i taunt people when i crack their big hands.. it sends them into instant-tilt and they loosen up and your hands get paid.

tell em my 47 was suited, your aces werent.

you know its working when your called a fish 3 times or more in the same sentence among other words.

I tried to do something like this earlier but it was stupid and way too obvious. I thought some would be on tilt enough. I had just busted one at the $50 nl on UB and I had been very aggressive and some people were pissed, especially cause I showed some steals with crap hands. The pot put my stack at 99.25 so I'm bb+1 and typed "I'd like an even $100" and push like I'm trying to just take the blinds. Two guys used all thier time before calling, including the one I busted but all folds. That's what I get for being lame

Gotta say that at the micro limits im at i like the
Stop bulls*ing and
yeah yeah
after someone raises.
comenting when someone hits their draw is a good one too. Maybe let them know it p*ed you off a bit because next time they might chase no matter what the cost Seems enough people want to show you what they have if they THINK that the raise is getting at you which i suppose is going to help you in future especially for the likes of me where only some people are playing cards in position whereas some are just playing cards.

my favorite was, when someone berated me online for calling their "uncallable" bet and winning the hand:

"hold on, be with you in a minute, still stacking your chips...."
Sharky: I've got good news and bad.
me: what's the good?
Sharky: we all voted you Most Valuable Player!
me: what's the bad?

A lot of these fall under "weak means strong" and are pretty obvious. If somebody says "I'll gamble" before shoving all in against me, I fold so fast my mouse catches fire. Those guys ALWAYS have the stone cold nuts. Fish might bite on that tired schtick but a good player never will... it's like audibly sighing in a live game before making a "reluctant" call.

I like to use the chat like this: heads up against an opponent, I'll tell them what I have before I bet. Then if they call down they'll see that I wasn't lying. I find that 90% of the time when a player tells you exactly what they have, they are telling the truth, but it seems to gather a lot more calls than folds, even from weaker hands. Weird. It works a lot in live games too. Once I've done this to someone once or twice, I'll do it again later on a complete bluff, and watch them fold. It's all about timing.

My favorite example of this - on a recent hand I drew a flush against a guy on the turn. Before I bet, I asked him "how much can I bet for you to pay off this flush?" He not only called the turn, he also called a much larger bet on the river, and I did indeed get paid off by his lowly top pair/bad kicker.

Another: when someone asks what you have after a big bet (i.e. they have an obvious straight, you make an obvious flush on the river and bet big; they ask "flush?") just say something like, "You better fold." Or something crazy-sounding but kind of true, like "This is the most beautiful flush of all time... bow down to my flush."

A good inducer chat: let's say a scare card (straight or flush) hits on the river after someone called you down, and you are first to act, with a monster - full house at least. Type in "you better not have drawn out on me" and then bet weak, or even check. They will bet big if they have it, even bigger if they don't.

A brilliant one I saw posted on this forum recently: a guy flopped quads and let his opponent bet (AA9 on the board). Then he asked "ace?" in the chat before calling. On the turn he checked, his opponent bet again, and he asked "nine???" before calling. This definitely enhanced his slowplay - of course it was helpful that his opponent had pocket nines (ouch).

Asking for it: in heads up play, ask for what you want. "Clubs" or "a nine" or whatever. Then if it hits, make a big deal out of it. Throw out a "lol" and bet really weak. Then a solid bet on the river. This is just a variant on telling them your cards, but they'll probably pay you off the first time. The next time you do it they definitely won't, so use that to your advantage. Start asking for things that don't relate to your hand, then if they arrive, make the same big deal out of it and watch 'em lay down.

Nice post, I'll have to try some of those you mentioned.

If you fold this fast against someone who says "I'll gamble", couldn't someone start using it to bluff you out of pots? Maybe not often, but every once in a while?

Probably so. It would be a pretty smart thing to do actually, because I think a lot of good players have the same reaction to it that I do. Sort of like how you can fake out good players with weak bets and weak body language - basically bluffing by pretending that you are trying to disguise a monster.

But the good players are faster to catch on... the fishes may never understand that weak means strong... in their entire lives... the good players are more aware of what's going on

I love chatting. When I have a perfect read on someone, and I'm in the hand. It's normally when I'm about to fold or call his all in.

Saying AA no good and showing him 2 pair and him showing AA is such a mindfck. You'd be supprised how often they will show you their cards. So it's almost double bonus.

Only once did I do it to effect the hand. I knew he had AA I flopped like a pair and the straight draw, only a slight dog. I bet he raised and I said AA no good and moved in and he folded. He might have folded either way, but it was fun. He was upset and left table after the next hand.

Here's one I've done a couple times - when I have a monster and someone is contemplating a call I say "I'll show." I think alot of people assume you want to show them a bluff. A couple times I've gotten calls immediately after I said that.

I just saw a great use of chat in the room I was in. A semi-shark was chatting up a fishie that was catching cards...

"You're so lucky today!" "Wow, nh!" Along with talking about what the fishie did for a living, his fav football team, etc....

He sensed blood and was moving in for the kill....

Held Ace of spades on a 5 spade board - it was a tournament. Final table

Played ultra-laggy the whole tournament... so naturally when I was dealt AJ o/s in position, I played crazy... especially when there were 3 spades on the flop... 4 on the turn, 5 on the river

I always did my standard bet, but on the river, I overbet huge... and it threw off the two players... both went into time while people were saying "he's bluffing! he's bluffing!"

Very happy when they called

i guess this is a fitting thread for this.

I was playing on absolute to bonus whore (200bb stacks? weird). in short, this guy is my bitch and I keep crushing him, but the river makes him think he got outdrawn and he folds. 3 times it happens. he starts cussing me out and it begins, here is the highlight.

I use to do this some times its really fun! I was bb, had 23 clubs... flop was something like 27J (two clubs) and so i figured wth, he raised $1 i called because I had been playing tight all night. I told him before I called "I guess my 23 will hold up"

Then a 3 flopped on river and I laughed and raised! He thought I was bluffing and he called with a high pair of jacks. I took the pot and he threw a fit! Said that it was against policy and he was going to report me for telling my hand!!!

So I sent an email to the site and asked, and they said that is true. I WILL get banned for telling my hands becuase it gives info away to other players yada yada...

They said if I do it I would be banned.

So I recommend against this tactic!
