Strategy question:
I know a guy who likes doing .25/.50 NLHE games at his house. Problem is, the max buy-in is TWENTY bucks at a time, with reloads allowed if you get under 10.
Any thoughts on how to play a game like this?

I like women. How do I get them to mate with me?
Your question is way too general. I can't tell you how to play a game like this, because you haven't told me anything beyond blinds and buy in.
Now if the people are ugly, what you do is you make comments that pertain to their ugliness to tilt them. Say stuff like "Hey Bill, did you get the license plate number on that truck that hit you in the face? You might wanna call the guy up and thank him for making you prettier." Quack Quack.

It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

Pre flop: Fold bad hands, limp ones with good potential, and raise good hands.
Post flop: Play poker.
Also adjust your strategy to suit the particular table.
Also that truck joke will work as well.

If someone looks like they might be better than you at poker... punch them in the face repeatedly.

More showdowns, fewer difficult river decisions.

Raise your top hands preflop, hit your pair or whatever and commit them on the flop. Not a whole lot of poker to worry about there beyond starting hand selection and basic board reading.

Thank you, Fnord. [edit: thanks, Smackin', too]
To the others: I didn't think I was asking a foolish question; I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach playing a game in which everyone starts out with only 40 BB to play a NL game.

With all due respect, it was not necessary for you to respond if this is all you had to say.

I actually had quite a chuckle at rondavu's post... but he provides some really good advice... so a tad bit more info and you'll get a really valuable post.
But alas, I know how this goes. There's a home game I play at that is 20 max dollar buy in and .50/1 blinds. I do it because its with my friends and fun. But, I play tight, play position poker and let everyone pay me off.
You have to play patient. Wait for the big hand to come. Don't chase - let the others chase. My friends are impatient - so patience becomes a huge virtue.
How do the guys usually play? Is it for money or fun? Are they patient? Do they play aggressively? A few more details and I think Rondavu will have an answer much better than me

Yea chasing becomes less important - a lot lower implied odds

The live game I play has 33BB stacks, so I know where you're coming from.
The most important thing is to bring enough money for at least 100bb. Expect heavy variance at first.
Here's the good news. Shorter stacks create more action. People get impatient and get EASILY pot committed. Don't let this be you. Stop thinking about pot odds preflop with your 78o even if everyone is in the hand. You'll wind up chasing some crappy draw and getting pot committed quickly with such a large pot.

The lower the stacks, the faster the committment. People get tied to hands postflop easier. People start overvaluing top pair. Traps work better. That's basically it.

What an awesome game to play in.
Play showdown poker.
Commit people to the pot preflop and on the flop. Tight play will win.

I must be missing something?
You came in with $1 bb.. then paid $0.50 sb.. (leaving you $3.50) and folded for a long time.. And bet $4 out of $3.50 when you hit QQ no over cards he called your check with 9 high and you won $8 out of the possible $7 based on $3.50 ?
What am I missing?
