Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Hero (10 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx

UTG+2 ($31.30)
MP1 ($4.80)
MP2 ($37.15)
MP3 ($7.25)
CO ($70)
Button ($14.07)
SB ($111.98)
Hero ($42.95)
UTG ($5.20)
UTG+1 ($18.51)

Preflop: Hero is BB with J, J. SB posts a blind of $0.10.
2 folds, UTG+2 raises to $3, 4 folds, Button calls $3, 1 fold, Hero calls $2.75.

Flop: ($9.10) 4, 8, 8 (3 players)
Hero bets $7, UTG+2 raises All-in, Button folds, Hero folds.

Final Pot: $16.10

I feel like I lost the least I could to be pretty sure I was beat here. But is this the best way to play it?

I'm not comfortable with a check-raise, since there's a good chance he has an overpair and I would probably be pot committed.

Is it better to check/fold the flop with the big raise (12xBB) from EP?

Or check/call the flop and see what happens on the turn?

With a preflop raise to 12xBB, I'm calling with JJ for the set or hoping I'm up against AK. If I don't hit, then I check to see how the strong bettor reacts to a rag flop. If he bets out pot strong I fold. If he underbets I minraise him for info. Your only ahead of AK, 99 and TT on this flop. It's a bad spot to be in.
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

What if the PFR was 4--6xBB from EP? Still check/fold?

No you wouldn't check fold in that situation. You would check raise almost every time. There's a much lower level of committment involved, and your opponent is going to react to the check raise with a reraise if he has an overpair that's ahead of you.

In order to get a proper read on a rag board where a large number of overpairs feel bossy such as this one (99-AA feel ahead), it's necessary to seek out the proper level of representation. In other words, by just betting out you rep anything from 22-AA on a 488 flop. By checkraising you let your opponent know your in the top range, and if they want to challenge they need the goods.

If you just bet out, 77 might go over the top of you, and that puts you in a tough spot. If you check raise, then I can guarantee 77 is not coming over the top from anyone less than a maniac.

I'm a big advocate of betting right for a read. This is a perfect example of when this is critical.

it'd be tough... if someone is raising 12x the BB they are pretty idiotic.

I might call, but i would need a few more reads on this guy before i call

Greedo017 is on a distinguished road
you gotta check and see how the guy plays it.

In this case on the flop, the cost of finding out whether you are ahead on this flop is greater than the chance that you actually are
