So did I just freak out here thinking of the straight and flush possibilities, or is this a reasonable use of the push? I'm still trying to get used to the idea of defending a hand.. in the past I would have just kept betting and hoped to hell nothing nasty came out to complete his hand..

yes, betting maybe 6 is much more appropriate imo. flush isn't scary, he could well have a straight draw, but you'll make more trying to see what comes on the river just making him pay for it. you might fill up and he makes the backdoor flush or trips, never know.

yes, that's also a good point. this is the general reason never to just push like this, because only better hands are calling.

My standard line is 3, 7, 11. I think this gets max value against a wide range of hands including second pair top kicker and bottom pair with the J.

Basically you were worried some idiot would call $10 while still drawing. Most won't.
Therefore you have to bet $10 when the made hand possibilities are out there. Don't overkill unless you are certain you have the best hand. Like say the board is {T Q 8 4} instead. Nothing beats you, but KJ or J9 could be hanging around instead of already owning you. In this case I go all in, because of the possibility I'm up against that idiot who would call $10 on a draw.
Unfortunately, with the made hand possibility out there, you have to let the idiot who calls $10 on a draw do just that if they want to. You're making it horribly incorrect for them, while still drawing to full house outs yourself.

It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

in that situation, the only hand that would call an all in overbet out of nowhere would be J9, a hand that beats you. You're better off betting more than half the pot.

Yep, a push isn't necessary there and actually benefits your villain by making it easy for him to fold. He probably had AJ. You should bet about 2/3 the pot. Any draw to a straight or flush will be making a mistake to call that.
