I got into online poker because I wanted to make it my career. I had very little enjoyment with poker previously, but the results of others I saw on forums and the allure to being stupid yet still making good money was strong and kept me going. I also am very poor academically and suffered an injury that keeps me from working realistic hours on my feet, so I had/have very few options for career. Add to that that I have a strong desire to do what I want when I want, and things looked pretty grim. I played for about a year previous as a losing player (yea I suck) between .01/.02 and 5/10. Finally I learned how to win a bit. I'm not professional yet technically, but am practically. I've been dropping hours from my day job and will be out of there completely soon. This is from July to now (yea I still suck). The three graphs are three different databases.

Started at 25nl, ending at 1/2. A handful of 'shots' at 2/4 and 3/6. Only one went well while the majority of them (especially the last few where I know I'm like at least a 2ptbb fav) sucked. I've played a tonnnn of different styles throughout, and have gradually gotten better. I now think I'm one of the most skilled SSNL fullring regs on the web (which is kinda dumb since we all pretty much suck). I have run below expectation over the third graph. May not look it, but trust me.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna be playing at 2/4. I think I should probably just switch to 6max as my next step. I do want to grind some easy money for a while. I've never done well at 6max, and I hate hate hate variance. I really wanna be playing in games where I'm at least 3ptbb, preferably 5ptbb, which I haven't ever been, but I think I may be right now.

I am definitely going to be getting a ton of coaching when I go for 6max. I'm even gonna be studying it for a few months before I take my first shot. I was really close to getting coaching for fullring (well, I did get quite a bit of informal 'coaching'), but I found that I could progress well on my own. Coaching would still have been/be good, but I'm weird inasmuch as I have difficulty understanding new concepts, and a lot of those concepts seem antipodal to what is already successful for me. I've found that I'm able to progress through self-evaluation enough to keep happy. I honestly am surprised with my results since I've learned how innately bad I am at card games.

These results may be pretty bad relative to actual good players, but they're still better than what I can do 9-5. Hopefully in two or three years I'll be able to hold my own at 5/10. I honestly think that I do not have what it takes to do that, though. Really the only way will be from study study study study study coaching coaching coaching coaching coaching.

I'd like to express my appreciation for this forum and members. You've been helpful. And to Renton especially. He helped my game way way more than I ever expected and than any other individual.

Oh, and I'm sure I've said somewhere that I'm on a 75k b/e stretch. Apparently I'm not. Actually about 40k, and that subsided 20k hands ago. Was going from memory glimpses which basically becomes a ballpark. And I don't know how to post pt stats. They won't be that revealing though since I have been allll over the place.

Congrats, GL, why not stick with FR since it's working?

You've had a couple 2k swings, unless this didn't bother you in the slightest keep some hours at your day job (sounds flexible so it would be awesome if you could go back if necessary).

I remember you being micro stakes, good to see people moving up and being successful.

I'm a huge finances nit. If you knew about the sacrifices I've made just so I can live a life of financial security and luxury you would think I am a moron.

When it comes to moving up, shorthanded eventually becomes the game. Part of my rationale for wanting to move to 6max instead of up in fullring is that I would be able to play higher stacks while game selecting. A big thing about the transition from 1/2 and 2/4 fr is that game selection plummets. It seems to be this way for 6max from 2/4 and 3/6. So I would mean to move up to 2/4 and stay there for a while at 6max.

Problem is still that I think 2/4 fr is easier to beat than 2/4 6max. Not so much that it's easier for me, but just look over the subforums on 2p2 and you'll notice that the shorthanded players are better than fullring players at the same stakes.

Also, I do really well at 1/2 but not nearly as close at 2/4. But being that I don't play a lot of tables I keep thinking that I shouldn't stick around any stake and grind.

We'll see. I may not even move to 6max for a long time. I may just really try to perfect my 1/2 game. That would be an interesting accomplishment.

All of those had 2/4, 3/6 and some tilt involved. My current 1/2 game has me up like 4 bi a day (2k hands) when I run decent and down 1 bi when I run shitty. My variance is actually pretty low there.

Besides, I work at a restaurant. Very easy to get hired at those places. I'm only making about 600 a month there right now. I haven't needed to work there for a while, but haven't quit for non-financial reasons.
