I made a set on the flop. There was a small bet and a call ahead of me. I raised it up. The original bettor called.
An obvious 3rd straight card came and he insta-checked. I figured he made a straight, so I checked behind, hoping the board would pair.
Instead, the 4th straight card came. He bet $16, giving me 2.5-to-1 odds on my hand being best.
Anyone call this bet?
I called, but can't tell if I should have.

Had this guy been chasing much previously? If so, then I fold here for sure. If not, then I think hard and probably fold anyway. It's tough though, especially since (from the chat) a similar hand just played out with flush cards, and you exemplified the situation by asking the guy what he had afterwards. Table now knows doubly well that you'll fold a good hand to a scare card from a draw.
I probably would have bet the turn - maybe going the same amount as on the flop, assuming that if he had the straight he'd have been an idiot. If he reraised, fold. If he calls, check the river (if given the opportunity) unless your boat comes.

I'm curious what cards he actually had. Did he have the straight before the 4 came?

Yes, he made the straight on the turn - just as I suspected. He had 45, so he was open-ended on the flop.
His instant check really made feel like he hit his straight.

What about this one? I made a set that was in the middle of a flop with 3 to a flush.
Easy call on river? I thought so. But he did bet about the size of the pot. Other opinions?

Hand 1: Why check the turn? He's probably not going to hit a card that will give him a good second best hand, and for that card to make his straight, he would have needed to be drawing at the ass end of the OESD.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
You mean the revolver, sir?
Precisely.

I don't know exactly how, but I got a really strong read that he had already made his straight. I realize he would have been drawing from the idiot end.
So you would have bet the turn. If he minraised, would you have called hoping for a paired board?
If he raised big, you fold? And if he bets the turn after a minraise, you fold?

When there is 4 to a straight, it's almost the same as 4 flush. If you got nothing at this point( you cold have bet a little more earlier), don't risk all of your stack.
