Hey guys,

I have been reading your stuff for a while and it is really helpful. Thanks for putting this thing together. I have a quick question.

I'm playing in a home tourney, $40 buy-in, and it is fairly early. I am in the small blind and dealt 6 8 of clubs. I decide to limp with about 5 callers and see if I can catch something. Flop comes 5 7 9 with two hearts. I flopped the nuts. But what do I do with two hearts on the board. I am first to act, so I decide to go all-in. I have a good stack, not the chip lead, but above average. I get one caller, who I forced all-in (but not by much). He has A 10 of hearts. Obviously, I am a little nervous. The turn and river are blanks and I pick up the pot. I actually was lucky and won the tourney.

But my question is, is there a better way to play nut straight with a possible flush draw before the turn?

The standard rule is to over-bet the pot. What you did sounded right. The other person made a very chance call and you profited. Good Job.

There are a lot of situation that pop up in similar circumstances. If you are looking at a good hand with a draw heavy board, take away other people's pot odds.

If you can beat those draw hands, give them their odds.

Example:
You have

Flop & Turn

Let give them their odds to chase the flush, or hopefully they have a made flush. You're full house will beat them.

Good job on your tournament. How did you finish?

I probably would've bet the pot on that straight myself. The AT of hearts guy obviously would've called you, and then I'm guessing would've been pot commited to your all in on the turn. I don't know how much your all in was compared to the pot. As a small stack, I probably would've moved all in (expecting to get a call or two as the small stack). As an average stack, I wouldn't, as you'll usually scare everyone out that way, especially on a low flop that probably missed everyone else (besides a potential flush draw).

Anyway, by betting the size of the pot, you're still easy giving bad pot odds to a flush draw, and maybe could get a hand like A9 or K9 to call / raise you too. An all in would probably fold to many people out for my liking. I'd rather try that on the turn, where you've already increased the pot size greatly, and will take down more money if they fold, and also more likely to get a call by your all in.
