I'm new to playing and would consider myself tight passive. I'd like to know what you do in this situation, because it seems to happen to me a lot.

As soon as I hit check he hit bet pot. I guess he had something like KT maybe one was a heart. Basicly I miss the flop, the other guy bets the pot is it all about your read on him?

Bet the pot before him if you are the last raiser preflop and first to act. If he calls then play carefully. If he reraises, then fold.

You are very predictable if you check when you miss and bet when you hit after raising preflop. This guy probably noticed and took advantage.
