Did I do the right thing betting here? Or should I just be check-calling and playing defensively until my flush is complete?

This is also often a good move because it disguises your actual hand. You're repping a made hand... if you hit the flush, you can check it and then raise the first aggressor into the pot (who ironically is usually repping that HE has the flush, which he probably doesn't).

It represents the ace and still keeps your draw relatively inexpensive. However your turn bet is a little strange. .16 into that pot is weak. I think you have 2 choices here. You either need to check and call depending on the size of the bet, or you need to come out very strong with a pot sized bet. A pot sized bet on the turn would have made the crap kicker run, and the straight draw run as well. Even if one of them stays, you still have a chance to make your hand on the river.
