Jeez, spots like this suck.
I don't think this hand is bad, but I think leading the turn and shutting down to resistance, or check/calling the turn and check/folding the river are probably better. On the river, you only beat a bluff or possibly a hand like Ah6h that thinks it's getting some real thin value on the river. But given how loose/passive he's described, I think you're usually beat here.

heres my reasoning for the way i played it, i think he views me as LAG, and i think he thinks i dont have shit on the flop, which i didnt. i thought he hit a pair on the flop when he called, since he usually just folds, i think any pair on the board is a logical holding for him since he is on the button and is rather loose preflop. turn brings the ace, i check showing weakness and he bet, which he could do with just about anything so i call with my top pair. river brings another ace, which makes it less likely that i hold an ace, so i check, he bets to rep the ace thinking theres no way i have an ace, and i call expecting him to show a flopped pair or a busted draw. good or bad?

I think you should bet more on the flop and lead the turn, obviously folding to a raise. That A is not exactly the best bluff card for villian. I think villian is a lot more likely to bet a blank turn than an A. So by checking you are losing value to worse hands and giving free cards to draws and other garbage when you are ahead. If you bet the turn, I think villian raises with almost all hands that have you beat. I don't particularly hate your line, but you are really only guessing when you make that river call. Obviously an ace is a very likely card for you to hold, and villian knows this unless he is a donkey. But of course if your image was lag that you think he is really getting fed up with you, then it changes everything.
Also, I think a lot of one-pair hands will check behind this river. If he has a hand like QJ then he is a donkey, plain and simple. I think you either get shown a monster or total air on the river, and not much in between.
