Against a typical opponent, it's a river fold.

To punish the weak players limping in in front of you.

Checking your option is fine. It really depends on how you want to play the hand.

If I raise this pre-flop, I would jack it up to $10, rep AA/KK and look to play some 2 street bingo.

Is it really EV+ to raise AQo in BB with 5 limpers?

It depends on how much you raise and how the table is playing, IMHO. My other concern is that by blowing limpers out of the pot you might be discouraging them from continuing to limp with weak hands that they will horribly misplay post-flop.

Also, do you guys bet the river here? Or would it be better to check and try for a cheap showdown?

On the river I like check/calling a reasonable bet. As played I fold to the raise. All you beat is a bluff. Also, since it is a small limped pot, I would bet full pot on flop and turn, and puke on the river.

As for the preflop check or raise decision, I agree 100% with Fnord's analysis.

check/call
(blocking)bet/fold
(value)bet/fold
even check/fold
are all resonable lines. Depends on what you think of him.

Can you explain the whole idea behind a blocking bet? What does it accomplish, and how much would it be in this case?

Worse hands call or fold instead of checking behind or making a difficult to call bluff.
