My plan here was to catch a player with an overpair or a set since these were the only hands paying me off, and try to win the maximum amount through leading out. One idea being that if I check, it'll be very difficult to get money in the pot without making it look as though I was slow-playing something on the flop. What might be the best way of betting this hand?

I bet less on the flop, maybe $8, make it look like a probe bet, not really a pot-building bet, and hope you get called-reraised.

Flop is rainbow with at worst a gutshot draw. First to act with top set, I would check to the raiser and see what he does with it. With 20BB in the pot, I feel somebody is going to go after it.

Someone will either stab or make a bet, go with the check raise.

Clearly a spot where you want to check and let someone else bet. On this board, you might as well check to him on all streets since you're probably a lock to win and op will not have much.

If he flopped the straight then I'll lose a nice pot. But with only one hand to be afraid of, I am going to take a chance.

yes but w/ that bet on that board (short of lower sets) the only hand that calls him has him beat.

no need to aggress on this one.
I agree. That's why I suggested checking it.

i just realized that a whole slew of hands including TT+ and any lower set maybe even 88 will be in for this ride. betting 1/2 pot is fine if you can catch your opp with one of these hands but chances are that everybody missed.

i still check but i take back what i said earlier.

oh and im not disputing anything you said, just agreeing .

Not sure this is a poor play. It looks like small pairs and overcards with nobody connecting. But you are out of position and may have TT or better in there so there is some risk (small but its there) to giving away a card.

It seemed to me that checking would serve no purpose since it's likely to just check around if it's the case that no one had a hand which they can either call or raise my bet with. I wouldn't expect anyone to try to bluff a field of four other players if they missed, so the only way I was getting action was if someone had something, and I win more from players with made hands by leading out than I do by checking.
