I love it. He had balls to go with his gut and call your reraise preflop. What a guy. When you play long enough you get the urge to raise a weird hand here and there. Call it intuition. Call it mysticism. Call it bullshit if you like. Believe me it happens to you. You don't think twice, and then you find out why you did it when the money lands in front of you.

It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

I have long wondered about plays like this. Against AK, AQ I’d think they could successfully call it down to the river and win if they paired an all low board. The problem comes in determining if they are up against and unmade hand V.S. a made one like here. Sure, he flopped a straight which makes this hand work for him but that happens .02 % of the time (or something like that). Most of the time I think he is giving up his PF money and folding the flop. This is one reason I am so set on continuation bets with AK, AQ…I don’t want these suckers staying in to draw on me.

That kinda strikes me as bullshit. But with the other caller, I'll sometimes call the extra $5 when I get caught bluffing. 'Cause if I don't a monster it's not going to cost me another cent, and if I do it's going to make me a bundle.

You have to reraise more preflop. He is getting almost 4-1 on his money to make that call.

This is exactly what happened in a $1/$2 NL live game I played last week. Both my opponent and I had $300+ at the table when I picked up K-K and reraised his $10 preflop raise to $50. The flop came, 9, 5, 2 and he ended up calling me all the way with just a pair of 9's and doubling me up. It made my night.

These plays work in certain situations where you can accurately put the raiser on a big pair, he's got a big enough stack to pay you off and he has shown poor post-flop skills.

A big pair is very difficult to improve on. You only have 2 cards in the deck that can help you. Suited connectors (like 89s) have about a 20% chance of beating a big pair. I'm not sure what the odds are for beating a big pair on the flop alone. But if you can flop 2pr or better, quite often its possible to take some large bets from a big pair. It's all about implied odds.

If you're the one holding the big pair you need to figure out how to play the flop and minimize your loss.
