The one positive is I didn't lose more off this hand. Do I fold these ever if they don't push it harder?

That gave me a laugh. You forgot the word "pansy". You are probably right. I wanted to feign weakness so I could get more money later. He's calling a raise anyway here. I was going to reraise the turn, but held off fearing he had the 8. He made a perfect river bet. He played me perfectly.

While you're right, he probably wouldn't fold, its probably still best to raise anyway because he's not usually going to catch his 2nd 8

Raise your blind preflop instead of letting SB limp in...that would have kept you out of that position altogether
Riv•er•stars (riv`er`stärs), n., adj. 1. A pathetic name used by incompetent poker hopefuls as an excuse for someone catching a hand better than theirs. Other variants: Jokerstars

Raise the BB when I have 23o in a ring game? I don't think so.

A good question to ask I guess is, what would be calling/betting with that I beat.

What would he have called with you on the flop and raised you when a 2nd 8 hit? My first thought would have been "fuck" and folded without a strong read.

In this case, unless you think he'd make this move with Ax (x not being 3 or 8) or a pocket pair, you're losing...you only beat a total bluff really

I play it the same on the flop, but once the 8 comes on the turn and he raises i'm pretty much out of there. Raising the flop is OK but people tend to believe you are holding a 3 when you got to see the flop in a limped pot without VP$IP, and therefore they fold out if they are just holding an 8. Anyone with an over pair or an 8 is drawing to 2 outs to make a boat better than your trips. No need to let them off the hand easily. I like a smooth call there in position, then raise the turn when a blank falls. If another 8 falls you just have to be ready to let it go. I'm definitely folding to that river bet, its like 1/2 the pot. Definitely a value bet with an 8.

Raising pre flop to keep the SB from limping is dumb. Why put money in the pot when you know you have the worst hand? Unless I had a strong read of tight and i knew i could buy the pot easily in position, i will never raise 23o in the BB with 1 limper and a SB completing...It's just wasting $$.
