3 players limp
me and player2 have 200+BB stacks, player2 is a tight player who raises his big hands pre flop.
I get dealt  
flop:   :Jh:
I bet $2 player3 folds, player 2 raises to $6, i re raise to $20, he re raises to 50$...
now I am thinking that I am beat, what else than a set of nines would he make this play with or less likely a set of jacks? I think to myself that he most likely has the set of nines, but push anyhow reminding myself of all the advice about not folding these type of hands because it will be +EV in the long run.
Pot 208$, opponent shows 99 a set of nines, precisely the hand I feared..
Does anyone make this fold? Or should I supress that inner voice and play it mechanically?

I honestly DONT make this fold, on the basis that he didnt raise preflop, and you says he raises big hands preflop. Personally, I would put him on J9 or Jx, either way, I think I would call the 50 and gauge it from there.

JJ, AJ and QQ-AA are out of the question here. If you know your opponent VERY well you can make this fold here and pin him on 99 as you know he won't be re-re-raising with J9 in his hand. Although most the time this is a 'lose all your money' scenario.

Uh, I'd re-re-raise with J9, expecially at 50NL every single time.

Problem is this guy was perhaps seeing 20% of the flops so he would likely not play J9 or any other Jx than JA. He was also good enough to know not to re-re raise TPTK with such deep stacks, so JA was pretty much out of the question. For many tight players including myself 99 is a limping hand from most positions and in most situations.
The more I think about it the more I lean towards that pushing here was a mistake and that I should have folded. All the information was there and I ignored it.

Losing to a higher set is definitely one of this game's most annoying tricks. If he was in one of the blinds and checked to the flop, you could easily put him on two pair, but against a good player, like you said, 99 can be a limping hand. Having a lower pocket pair against an opponent is always a recipe for playing a hand uphill. I guess you just admit that he played the hand well and beat you, and just move on.

I would have lost my stack here as well...and I would have made a little note on the player saying "not raising 99".

its pretty standard not to raise 99 imo. why would you?
and, i've thought about laying down a set before also. guy i'd been playing with for a while had been playing solid, and really been catching some hands against me. anyway, it comes around, i end up with a set of 4's vs. his set of kings, both flopped. i bet big on the river, he reraised, i just called. closest i've ever come to laying down a set because of fear of a higher one.

I was in a similar position with 55 on a board of 45J, the guy re-raised me all in and i put him on either 44 or JJ, fortunately it was 44, but i figured even if he did have JJ i should call in case i was wrong

Bill,
this is one of those hands that I don't sweat later on because I would have pinned him on J-9, or assumed that maybe he had only top pair and was trying to buy the pot. Its kind of hard to think that your set is not the best hand out there. This is just my oppinion and I am not by any means a great poker player but I would have lost my stack on this hand too.
