IMO you should push on the turn. His check call shows he had a draw and the turn didnt help either.

No. You're only going to be called by hands that beat you. Personally, I think that guy was an idiot for chasing a straight with no heart when there are 3 hearts on the flop, and two of his outs put 4 on the board, but that's not really the issue. The problem is that a sane player would have difficulty calling here with anything short of a flush, set or, straight. I wouldn't imagine a player would have either a set or straight in this situation, since a set should not have played so passively on the flop and turn, and a naked straight draw shouldn't folded instantly on the flop. The most likely hands, I believe, are a flush or a flush draw, and therefore the right thing to do is check-call on the river, depending upon the size of your opponents bet. This gives your opponent a chance to bluff if he/she was chasing a flush and missed, and also limits your losses if he/she flopped the flush.

In retrospect I should have pushed on the turn, but I eliminated any odds he had with the pot bet unless he had the flush already. I don't think he had the flush based on his flop behavior. I figured he was one away from the flush. I thought it pretty remote he would be holding 78 and still chasing the straight. I thought he may have QT and missed it.

The only reason I only bet $1 preflop was because everyone folded and I didn't want to collect .75 with AA (again!!!). You should see my returns on AA and KK. They are barely positive because everyone folds or the flop hammers me. I can't remember the last time I won a hand postflop with high PP. An overcard comes out almost every time and gets bet on. I've had a bad run lately with PPs. I've had a bad run in general. I took $25 and turned it into $95 in an hour, then watched it slowly dwindle back down to $25 3 hours later. Then followed that up with 3 sitngo bubble finishes where I was easily ahead on each hand and lost. Then followed those up with poor cards and hands like this where I watched premimum hands go to nothing on the flop over and over again. My flop rep wins were the only things keeping me afloat.

I'm only playing the recommended hands and I'm being aggressive when I have the best hand. Should I tighten up more and be a little more passive or just keep truckin?

I don't think you should bet more than the pot with only an overpair. The only place I would consider pushing all in is preflop.
