I've had to move down stakes after a horrible downswing, and my confidence is getting back up again. But I've never been sure about the best value plays for these hands. Bet the river, or just check behind?

fold minus a read.

Checking behind on the river is standard. He's usually calling ahead and folding behind.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
You mean the revolver, sir?
Precisely.

Just fold marginal hands preflop so you don't have to play them minus a read.
My sig is too much for you to handle.

why? exploitable opponents, i can get away from hands, and in position. Raise, maybe. Fold, not necessarily. the flop raise was for info.

certain presuppositions have to be made about faceless 25nl players, i got a good read from this...

If you are playing against un-knowns the standard play is to fold. As played, check behind on the river.

It's good that you got a read, but you could probably get that read by not playing this hand, not spending your own money and watching them play it out. What if you get check-raised on the turn? Sure you got away, but you lost $5 for a pot you shouldn't have even been in.

For a presupposition, how about "I'm good enough to make money without gambling with tards". If you already had a read like, he's crazy loose, or he will call any flop/turn, or he thinks OESD is the nuts then you'd get more discussion.
