There was nothing you could really do. You were out of position, he flopped a set and you had an overpair. He just smooth called all the way to river. There was nothing wrong with your play.

I guess I feel I should have maybe slowed down maybe on the turn or river.

For some reason a Set was the last thing on my mind. I put him on A/k or a/q of Spades drawing to the flush.

Once I was re-raised on the river I knew I was had, but does anyone fold this hand? I thought the pot odds were just too good, but I knew I was beat.

Also,

Was my river bet too small? It was meant to be a value bet on a missed flush or something, but it just got me in trouble.

Thoughts?

Read something interesting on this topic by Jennifer Harman the other day. Hope I'm not terribly misquoting, but she asks if, in a situation like this, the pot is laying you odds for the chance you think you are beat. For example, if you are 99% sure you are beat here, the pot is not laying you odds on the 1% chance you could be wrong. If you are only 55% sure you are beat, the pot IS laying you odds to call.

Just an interesting concept of applying pot odds in combination with your reads of opponents. Thought maybe it could apply here, though. Anyone else's thoughts?

Limps and calls from UTG are either AJ, KQ or small pocket pairs unless you are dealing with a super loose player. The fact that he called your flop bet with a bunch of rags would make me worried. I would go into "cheap showdown" mode. If there was a Q or a J on that board I would feel better about betting it but if he calls your pot sized bet, I would come back with a probing bet on the turn of $3 and see if he would raise me. A raise here would almost certainly indicate a set (like 70% of the time) and may cause me to fold it if I was up against a tight player.
