What should I have done differently? I didnt think I could fold to his river re-raise because I caught the card I was hoping to get.

raise more preflop, dont let people in for cheap, when the limits are that low dont bet 3-4xBB people will for sure call. Other wise you could have bet the turn since everyone was weak, a good 2-300 bet might get people to fold.

The river checkraise is a pretty dead give-away that you're beat.

If he didn't flop two pair or a set, he made it by the river.
